The printing device has a screen holder for an interchangeable printing screen and a doctor device assigned to the screen holder, wherein, by means of the doctor device, a printing material can be applied onto the substrate to be printed on through the printing screen. A screen magazine is assigned to the doctor device for storing at least one printing screen for the doctor device.

There is described a combined printing press (10; 10*) for the production of security documents, in particular banknotes, comprising a screen printing group (2; 2*) and an intaglio printing group (3) adapted to process substrates in the form of individual sheets or successive portions of a continuous web. The screen printing group (2; 2*) is located upstream of the intaglio printing group (3) and comprises at least one screen printing unit (20; 20*) designed to print a pattern of optically-variable ink onto one side of the substrates, which optically-variable ink contains flakes that can be oriented by means of a magnetic field. The screen printing group (2; 2*) further comprises a magnetic unit (24; 24*) located downstream of the screen printing unit (20; 20*), which magnetic unit is designed to magnetically induce an optically-variable effect in the pattern of optically-variable ink applied by the screen printing unit (20; 20*). The screen printing group (2; 2*) further comprises at least one drying/curing unit (25, 28; 25*, 28*) designed to dry/cure the pattern of optically-variable ink in which the optically-variable effect has been induced by the magnetic unit (24), prior to transfer of the substrates to the intaglio printing group (3).

There is provided a screen printing apparatus including: a mask plate on which a plurality of pattern holes are formed; a carrier supporter which supports a carrier which has a plurality of first openings and in which a plurality of workpieces are disposed on the plurality of first openings; a backup unit which has a plurality of workpiece supporters; a raising and lowering unit which lifts up the plurality of workpieces from the carrier and returns the plurality of lifted-up workpieces to the carrier; an aligner which aligns the plurality of workpieces in accordance with arrangement of the plurality of pattern holes; an overlapper which relatively moves the backup unit and the mask plate; and a print head which prints a paste on the plurality of workpieces on the plurality of workpiece supporters through the plurality of pattern holes.

The print head is moved away from the material processing head by the first drive actuator during a distance increasing phase of the printing stroke to increase a separation distance between the print head and the material processing head.
