The invention is directed to a device that properly aligns a user's hand when gripping a writing implement, such as a pencil. The device includes four separate elements that combine in specific ways to grow and/or build a mature grasp. The device includes a base that is configured around the pencil and provides support for the user's fingers. A handle can releasably attach to the writing implement, providing support for the user's palm. A web support can be releasably attached to the handle, thereby stabilizing the user's thumb while gripping the writing implement. The device can also include an independent web support that can be moved closer or towards the base depending on the separation needed. Advantageously, the grip device provides several stages to develop and build a mature grip pattern.

A mechanism for assisting painters and other persons who hold manual tools for long periods of time is disclosed. In the painter embodiment, the mechanism assist painters in gripping a paintbrush, including retaining control of the brush even during non-gripping intervals. The mechanism reduces pain and cramping partly be allowing for frequent release of the grip, thereby lessening pain and cramping. The mechanism also prevents or delays onset of carpal-tunnel by not forcing them to grip their paint laden paintbrush 100% of the time. This reduces a problem arising from a constant application of thumb, forefinger, and auxiliary fingers in a permanent clamping motion.

The device includes an elongated body having an outer surface and an inner channel for insertion of a writing instrument; a first positioning part forming a loop extending from the outer surface of the elongated body through which a thumb of a user may be inserted; a second positioning part forming a loop extending from the outer surface of the elongated body through which an index finger of a user may be inserted; and a third positioning part forming a loop extending from the outer surface of the elongated body through which a middle finger of a user may be inserted, wherein the first, second, and third positioning parts are arranged such that a user's thumb, index finger, and middle finger form a tripod grasp about the elongated body.

An assistive device to promote the development or recovery of writing and drawing capabilities of a user. A writing instrument has a gripping tube rotatably fitted on a front portion of a barrel. At the front portion of the barrel, plural identifying marks having different identification characteristics, such as color, are disposed in parallel in a circumferential direction of the barrel. A window portion is provided in the gripping tube through which is visible an identifying mark selected by rotating the gripping tube relative to the barrel. When the user rotates the gripping tube to the position where the chosen color is visible through the window portion, a locking pawl on the barrel engages with a locking groove at the rear end of the gripping tube to lock the gripping tube in this position. Once locked in position, the gripping tube cannot accidentally rotate thereby preventing a change of colors appearing at the window portion even if the writing instrument is subjected to shock or vibration.
