In exemplary implementations of this invention, a computer-assisted, handheld machining tool allows even an inexperienced user to carve a complex 3D object, while maintaining artistic freedom to modify the sculpture from an initial CAD design. The tool prevents the user from unintentionally removing material from a volume defined by the CAD design. It does so by slowing or halting spindle rotation as the bit approaches or penetrates the protected volume. The user can override this protective feature. The tool may operate in at least three interaction modes: (i) a static mode in which a static CAD model is used, where the computer assists by preventing the user from damaging the static model; (ii) a dynamic mode where the computer dynamically modifies the CAD model during the sculpting process; and (iii) an autonomous mode where the computer can operate independently of the user, for tasks such as semi-automatic texture rendering.

The proposed actuator of engraving machine relates to decorative machining of hard materials, and can be used in arrangement of facades and monuments. A permanent magnet and a core with a pivot are concentrically fixed in an upper part of a housing. An electric coil is placed on a cylindrical frame of nonmagnetic material and can move in the axial direction in a ring gap between the core and the permanent magnet together with a pusher fixed in two circular elastic membranes, spaced in the axial direction and fixed in the housing along an external contour. A shank is fixed on the pusher under the membranes, having a central part extending through a bottom cover of the housing. It has a hollow axial opening, wherein a removable impact tool is mounted. The design is simple and reliable. Durability, accuracy and speed of engraving of the actuator are improved.

The processing apparatus includes a first cartridge including: a first processing tool to form a machining mark by grinding or cutting a surface of a sheet-like object; an actuator to operate by an external power supply and drive the first processing tool; and a first housing to accommodate the first processing tool where a tip of the first processing tool is exposed and accommodate the actuator. The processing apparatus also includes a carriage including a mounting section which the first cartridge is detachably mounted; a transfer mechanism to move the object and the carriage relatively to each other; and a control circuit to control driving of the transfer mechanism to form the machining mark on the surface of the object by the first processing tool.
