A plurality of water carrying channels are provided for directing water into the footwear receiving space through said set of brushes. A soiled water receiving tank is provided for collecting soiled water from the footwear receiving space. The apparatus is arranged such that relative movement of a piece of footwear received in the footwear receiving space with respect to the set of brushes in the presence of water being directed into the footwear receiving space via the plurality of water carrying channels cleans at least one surface of the received piece of footwear.
