PNEUMATIC TIRE HAVING A FIBER-REINFORCED RUBBER LAYER AND PREPARATION THEREOF
20230173847 · 2023-06-08 ·

A pneumatic tire having a fiber-reinforced rubber layer can help prevent foreign objects from penetrating/extending beyond the tread and into its underlying layer(s), thereby desirably increasing the overall lifespan of the tire. In one embodiment, the tire includes at least one fiber-reinforced rubber layer, which can be generally supported by a tire carcass and interposed directly between a tread portion and belt ply. The fiber-reinforced rubber layer can define a barrier/barrier layer between the tread portion and belt ply and includes a rubber compound that is reinforced with one or more types of fiber (e.g., chopped nylon fiber) and has one or more specific chemical compounds that can provide desirable barrier properties (e.g., abrasion resistance, penetration energy, and DIN properties), thereby helping to prevent foreign objects from penetrating/extending beyond the tire tread and into its underlying layer(s), such as the belt ply and carcass.

Composite reinforcer sheathed with a layer of polymer that is self-adhesive to rubber

A composite reinforcer that can adhere directly to a diene rubber matrix is usable as a reinforcing element for a pneumatic tire. The composite reinforcer includes at least one reinforcing thread, such as a carbon steel cord. Covering each thread individually or several threads collectively is a layer of a thermoplastic polymer composition. The thermoplastic polymer composition includes at least one thermoplastic polymer have a glass transition temperature that is positive, a poly(p-phenylene ether) (PPE), and a functionalized unsaturated thermoplastic styrene (TPS) elastomer having a glass transition temperature that is negative. The TPS elastomer includes a functional group selected from: an epoxide group, a carboxyl group, an acid anhydride group, and an ester group. A process for manufacturing such a composite reinforcer is presented, as well as a process for producing a rubber article, especially a pneumatic tire, incorporating such a composite reinforcer.

A method for manufacturing an annular carcass of a tire includes providing first and second ply materials, each including cords; winding at least a layer of the first ply material and a layer of the second ply material onto a carcass drum so the first ply material radially surrounds the second ply material; arranging two cables onto the cylindrical carcass preform; turning the part of the cylindrical carcass preform about the closer cable onto the part of the cylindrical carcass preform between the two cables; and expanding the cylindrical carcass preform to form an annular carcass having, in a bead area, inner and outer layers of the first ply material and inner and outer layers of the second ply material. The ply materials are arranged so the cords thereof are arranged cross-wise with respect to its neighboring ply materials or a neighboring ply material, considering the innermost or outermost layer.
