GUIDE WHEEL OVERLOAD INDICATORS

A novel system for providing for safe operation of railgear, that is, a set of guide wheels that allow road vehicles to travel on railroad tracks, based on the use of overload indicators installed on the suspension arm of each guide wheel to give operators a quick, visual representation of whether or not a guide wheel is overloaded.

A rail vehicle including a wheel assembly having wheels configured to traverse rails of a railroad track, a controller having a processor in communication with the wheel assembly, and a non-transitory computer readable medium, disposed on the vehicle, and containing instructions, which, cause the following steps in real-time as the vehicle traverses the rails: determine a rail pressure of the wheels on the rails, determine a degree of curvature of the rails as the vehicle moves along the railroad track, determine a minimum rail pressure of the wheels on the rails based on the degree of curvature, determine if the rail pressure is equal to or greater than the minimum rail pressure and adjust the rail pressure of the wheels on the rails to be the minimum rail pressure when the rail pressure is less than the minimum rail pressure to maintain stability of the vehicle on the railroad track.

RAIL GEAR APPARATUS
20190263205 · 2019-08-29 ·

A rail gear system for attachment to the frame rails of a truck that readily accommodates the span of the frame rails. The system including an axle tube, a pivot tube, first and second spring sub-systems, and a pivot bar with an actuator plate mounted to the pivot bar. Frame rail mounting brackets are secured to the two frame rails of the truck. A primary actuator is employed to elevate the axle tube off of the rails and adjustment of the width of the frame rails is accomplished by movement of the bushings along both the pivot tube and pivot bar until the desired separation between the frame rail mounting brackets is achieved.

Autonomously drivable vehicles, selectively controllable by on-board and remote controllers and capable of travel on both conventional railways and conventional roadways by virtue of bimodal wheel combinations of roadways wheels and railway wheels, the latter of slightly smaller radius than that of the former, are disclosed. Vehicle direction and speed are alternatively and selectively controlled by (1) an onboard vehicle controller (autonomous and/or personal) or (2) a remote controller (as in a locomotive or central rail network management system). In railway mode, direction is controlled by track-following railway wheels and movement is propelled either by an on-board motor or motors or by locomotive force supplied by a connected vehicle such as a conventional locomotive.

Road/rail vehicle with tractive weight control

A road/rail vehicle has front and rear road wheels, an engine driving the rear road wheels, and an indicator of actual vehicle speed. Retractable front and rear rail wheels are mounted on the vehicle and movable from a raised road position for operation in a road mode to a lowered rail position where the rail wheels engage rails of a railroad track for operation in a rail mode. A suspension system is adjustable in the rail mode to vary a weight proportion of vehicle weight that is a tractive weight carried by the rear road wheels and a guidance weight carried by the rear rail wheels, and a suspension control is adjusts the suspension system to provide a selected weight proportion. A maximum allowable vehicle speed decreases as the tractive weight increases and a maximum speed indicator shows the maximum allowable vehicle speed for the selected weight proportion.
