Described herein are deadfront assemblies that are configured to exhibit variable transmission and reflection performance attributes. The deadfront assemblies described herein comprise a first ink layer, an intermediate layer, and a second ink layer. The intermediate layer is disposed between the first and second ink layers and is configured to reflect light that is transmitted through the first ink layer back through the first ink layer so that one or more colors of the ink in the first ink layer is visible in the reflected light. The second ink layer is configured to counteract deviations in optical transmission caused by the first ink layer so that light transmitted through the deadfront assembly is not perceptively altered in color. Overlapping regions of the first and second ink layers comprise inverse appearance attributes so that light output from a light source and transmitted through the deadfront assembly has a desired appearance.

The aerial display area is located at the upper edge portion of the display surface in an installed orientation. The screen display area is a part of the display surface located below the aerial display area. The present invention relates to a lens system for a head-up display. The technical gist of the present invention is to provide a lens system for a head-up display, comprising: a first group of lenses positioned toward a screen with reference to a diaphragm; and a second group of lenses positioned toward an image element, wherein each lens is combined/arranged such that the DN/DT (abs.) (temperature coefficients of refractive index (10.sup.6/ C. at 632.8 nm)) value of a lens that satisfies |P|>=40 (P is refractive power of each lens), among the plurality of lenses constituting the first and second groups of lenses, has a positive number value or a negative number value according to the refractive power, and the lens system accordingly has thermal compensation characteristics by controlling the amount of change in the focal distance of each lens. Accordingly, the present invention advantageously provides a lens system for a head-up display wherein the DN/DT value, which follows the refractive power of each lens, is arranged/designed appropriately such that temperature-based thermal compensation characteristics are satisfied by controlling the amount of change in the focal distance of each lens.

A vehicle controller determines likelihood of downshifting, such as by detecting braking and clutch disengagement. In response, the vehicle controller determines a desired angular velocity for the engine for a gear lower than a current gear. A tachometer display is updated to indicate the current angular velocity of the engine and the desired angular velocity. A difference between current and desired angular velocities is determined and fill in a region of the tachometer display, such as a sector between needles indicating current and desired angular velocities or most or all of a surface of the tachometer. The tachometer may be updated in the same manner according to a desired angular velocity in cases where the drive shifts into gear following coasting in neutral.
