An electro-pneumatic hand brake system is for a vehicle with spring-loaded brakes. The system includes a pneumatic relay valve, a bistable solenoid valve for controlling the relay valve and a control unit for controlling the bistable solenoid valve. An outlet of the relay valve is connected to ports for the spring-loaded brakes. An inlet of the bistable solenoid valve is provided for connecting to a line carrying ventilation pressure. A self-retaining switching valve with a control input is provided before the inlet of the bistable solenoid valve. The self-retaining switching valve can be moved against the force of a restoring element from a blocking position into a flow-through position when there is sufficient pressure at its control input. An outlet of the self-retaining switching valve is connected to the inlet of the bistable solenoid valve.

Method for Emergency Engagement of a Holding Brake, and Electropneumatic Brake System
20230311828 · 2023-10-05 ·

A method for emergency engagement of a holding brake of a vehicle having an electropneumatic brake system. The electropneumatic brake system includes a service brake system with a service brake and a holding brake system with the holding brake. The holding brake system has spring brake cylinders. The service brake system includes a service brake control unit. The electropneumatic braking system includes at least one brake circuit for the service brake and the holding brake. The service and holding brakes may be in separate brake circuits. The spring brake cylinders can be vented when a supply pressure in at least one brake circuit for the service brake decreases. The method includes reducing, via the service brake control unit, the supply pressure in at least one brake circuit for the service brake under a program control in defined conditions.

A spring brake cylinder (100) for a brake system (800) of a motor vehicle (1000) includes a brake release mechanism (110), configured to axially contract a brake spring chamber (112) against a brake spring force in a release direction (RD) from a parking position (PP) to a driving position (PD). A brake state indicator (120) includes an actuation element (128) axially held in a force equilibrium (EF) between an actuation spring (124), exerting an actuation force (FA) on the actuation element (128), and a return spring (126), exerting a return force (FR) on the actuation element (128). The actuation force (FA) is altered by nut motion (MN) of a running nut (122), caused by rotational motion of a release screw (132) to shift the force equilibrium (FE), resulting in an axial movement (ME) of an actuation element (128) operatively coupled to an indicator pin (134) of the brake state indicator (120).

Spring brake pushrod to park diaphragm interface

An interface between an adapter push rod and a parking brake diaphragm seal includes an axial projection at one end of the push rod, a thread extending axially between a free end of the projection and a remainder of the push rod, and a washer having an approximately conical wall extending radially inwardly from an outer circumference of the washer towards a central mounting connection having a radial flange. A nut is threaded over the free end of the projection, and an opening in a hardened element is aligned axially with the projection to receive the projection. A circumferential groove defined in a side of the radial flange forms a boundary between the approximately conical wall and a remainder of the washer, and a portion of the diaphragm seal is pressed by the nut and the hardened element into the circumferential groove to produce a sealing bead.

Spring brake actuators

A spring brake actuator for applying a brake of a vehicle includes a housing containing a diaphragm that separates the housing into first and second chambers. A clutch actuator device is for selectively compressing a compression spring such that the spring brake actuator is operable in a plurality of states including a parking state, driving state, and a braking state.

Master brake cylinder

A master brake cylinder includes a unique mounting arrangement for securing thereof to a firewall of a vehicle and a particular porting arrangement. A cylinder sleeve includes a series of ports that cooperate with movement of the piston allowing for by-passing of the piston at one end position and then movement of the piston past the ports for brake actuation. Additionally a two stage pressure intensifier is provided that is in-line between a master brake cylinder and brake pistons. The intensifier also includes a by-pass position at one end of the movable piston having a differential area between a forward and a rear face of the piston.

Detection device and method

A brake assembly includes a first assembly component; a second assembly component that is movable with respect to the first assembly component; and a device for determining a status of the brake assembly. The device includes a sensor trigger disposed on the second assembly component; a sensor disposed on the first assembly component, the sensor being configured to detect a proximity of the sensor trigger with respect to the sensor; and a controller in communication with the sensor and configured to determine the status of the brake assembly based on the detected proximity of the sensor trigger with respect to the sensor.

Sealing assembly for a spring brake actuator

A sealing assembly for installation on a port of a spring brake actuator includes a plug, a one-way valve and a cap. The plug receives the one-way valve for providing one-way air flow through the orifices and maintaining about two psi in the spring brake chamber at zero stroke. An elastomeric piece is affixed to a first set of segments of the plug for sealing against an inner surface of the port. The cap has arms sized to extend around a third set of segments of the plug and snap onto the plug. A fourth set of segments of the plug elastically deform so the sealing assembly can be installed and removed from the port easily.
