A system may comprise one or more processors, and a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, causing the system to perform receiving, from a first sensor coupled to a front part of a vehicle, a first set of sensor data that include data of a first edge of a body part, or from a second sensor coupled to the front part of the vehicle, a second set of sensor data that include data of a second edge of the body part. The system may perform calculating, based on the first or second set of the sensor data, location of the first edge or the second edge of the body part relative to the front part, and determining whether the relative location of the first edge or the second edge is within an expected location range. The system may perform sending a notification that driving adjustment of the vehicle is required if the relative location is outside the expected location range.

Method for determining a maximum speed limit for a reversing vehicle combination

A method is provided for determining a maximum speed limit for a reversing vehicle combination that includes a towing vehicle and at least one towed trailer. The method includes determining a maneuver that is to be performed by the vehicle combination, simulating the complete maneuver in advance by using a control algorithm and a state space model, thereby obtaining the steering behavior of the vehicle combination during the maneuver, and calculating the maximum speed limit for the vehicle combination during the maneuver by using at least one predefined limiting condition. A maximum speed limit for a reverse assistance function can be estimated in advance, which allows for a faster and more efficient reversing of the vehicle combination, and at the same time allows for an improved comfort for the driver.

Display system utilizing vehicle and trailer dynamics

A vehicle and trailer display system is disclosed. The display system includes a plurality of imaging devices disposed on the vehicle, each having a field of view. The display system further includes a screen disposed in the vehicle operable to display images from the imaging devices. A controller is in communication with the imaging devices and the screen and is operable to receive a hitch angle corresponding to the angle between the vehicle and the trailer. Based on the hitch angle, the controller is operable to select a field of view of an imaging device to display on the screen.

USE OF LASER SCANNER FOR AUTONOMOUS TRUCK OPERATION

A vehicle includes one or more laser scanners and an on-board vehicle computer system communicatively coupled to the laser scanners. The computer system uses information (e.g., coordinate points) obtained from the laser scanners to calculate a trailer angle (e.g., a cab-trailer angle) for the vehicle. The computer system may include a shape detection module that detects a trailer based on the information obtained from the laser scanners and an angle detection module that calculates an angle of the detected trailer relative to a laser scanner, calculates the orientation of the detected trailer based on that angle and dimensions (e.g., width and length) of the trailer, and calculates a cab-trailer angle based on the orientation of the trailer. The computer system may include an autonomous operation module configured to use the cab-trailer angle in an autonomous or computer-guided vehicle maneuver, such as a parking maneuver or backing maneuver.

A blind-spot detection system includes an angle-detector, a radar-sensor, and a controller. The angle-sensor is used to determine a trailer-angle relative to a host-vehicle of a trailer being towed by the host-vehicle. The radar-sensor is used to detect an other-vehicle present in a blind-zone proximate to the host-vehicle. The controller is in communication with the angle-detector and the radar-sensor. The controller is configured to adjust a sensing-boundary that defines the blind-zone based on the trailer-angle.

Trailer backup aid speed limiting via braking

A trailer backup assist system for a vehicle reversing a trailer is provided herein. The system includes a brake system and a steering system of the vehicle. A controller is configured to output a brake torque request to the brake system and a steering command to the steering system, wherein the brake torque request and the steering command are each based at least in part on a trailer mass.

Trailer backup assist systems and methods

The systems and methods disclosed herein are configured to determine if a trailer backup assist system is needed to assist a driver with a procedure to backup a trailer that is connected to a vehicle. The estimation of need for assistance may be determined by an assistance model. If assistance is needed, the systems and methods provide an input to initiate a process to enable the trailer backup assist system.

VEHICLE SENSING SYSTEM

A vehicle sensing system is for being disposed on a vehicle. The vehicle sensing system includes a calculating unit, which includes a turning calculating module and a vehicle dimension dataset. The vehicle dimension dataset includes at least one of a wheelbase, a vehicle width, a front overhang and a rear overhang of the vehicle. The calculating unit is configured to receive a turning dataset of the vehicle. Based on the turning calculating module, the calculating unit is configured to determine an inner front wheel and an inner rear wheel. The calculating unit is configured to further determine a turning alarm zone in accordance with the vehicle dimension dataset and the turning dataset. The turning alarm zone is dependent on at least one of time and the turning dataset.

Systems and methods for managing tractor-trailers

Systems and methods for causing a vehicle to avoid an adverse action are described. In one aspect, a sensor on first vehicle may determine the existence and location of lane markers or objects, and use that information to cause a second vehicle to avoid exiting its lane or colliding with an object. Data transmitted from a first vehicle to a second vehicle may be used to determine a path for the second vehicle, such that it avoids an adverse action. This data may include information used to determine a pose of the second vehicle, kinematics of the second vehicle, determine dimensions of the second vehicle, and potential adverse actions. This data may be transmitted while the vehicles are platooning.
