A plurality of virtual gear positions are established by an electric continuously variable transmission, and the number of speeds of the virtual gear positions is equal to or larger than the number of speeds of mechanical gear positions of a mechanical stepwise variable transmission. One virtual gear position or two or more virtual gear positions is/are assigned to each mechanical gear position, and the mechanical gear position is shifted in the same timing as shift timing of the virtual gear position. The virtual gear positions assigned to each mechanical gear position when the mechanical gear position is upshifted are different from the virtual gear positions assigned to each mechanical gear position when the mechanical gear position is downshifted. Thus, the amount of heat generated in frictional engagement elements of the mechanical stepwise variable transmission is prevented from being increased.

ACCIDENT ATTENUATION SYSTEMS AND METHODS

Example accident attenuation systems and methods are described. In one implementation, a method determines a speed of a second vehicle approaching from behind a first vehicle and determines a distance between the first and second vehicles. The method also determines whether the second vehicle can stop before colliding with the first vehicle. If the second vehicle cannot stop before colliding with the first vehicle, the method takes action to attenuate the potential collision by applying full brake force, tightening seat belts, and/or turning the front wheels of the first vehicle to direct the first vehicle away from oncoming traffic.

A drivability target engine speed is set based on a shift stage based on an accelerator opening level and a vehicle speed and the vehicle speed, and a base driving force is set based on an accelerator required driving force and the drivability target engine speed. When an elapsed time after an accelerator depression amount increases is less than a threshold value, a correction driving force is set based on an increase in accelerator depression amount and an engine, a first motor, and a second motor are controlled such that an effective driving force obtained by adding the correction driving force to the base driving force is output to a drive shaft for a hybrid vehicle to travel.

Methods and systems are provided for classification of the type and weight of a trailer being towed by a vehicle. The classification is based on a comparison between a real-time road gradient as determined by the vehicle system and an expected road gradient as determined from an off-board or an onboard map. Vehicle operations may be adjusted based on the classification of the attached trailer.

ADAPTIVE BRAKE CONTROL SYSTEM FOR GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT, AND METHOD OF RETROFITTING THEREOF

An adaptive brake control system for use in Ground Support Equipment (GSE) including a speed control system. The adaptive brake control system includes a distance sensor adapted to measure a distance from an edge of the GSE to an external object and a speed senor adapted to measure a ground speed of the GSE. An actuator, such as a brake actuator, is adapted to cause the speed control system of the GSE to slow or stop the GSE. A controller is functionally associated with the distance sensor, the speed sensor, and the actuator. The controller is adapted to receive inputs from the distance sensor and the speed sensor, and, based on the received inputs, to trigger the actuator to affect slowing or stopping of the GSE.
