Systems and methods for operating an autonomous vehicle
An example method includes detecting, via sensor data collected from sensors located on the AV, an upcoming object located on a roadway. The method further includes determining, from the sensor data, a relative distance and a relative direction of the upcoming object with respect to the autonomous vehicle. The method further includes mapping the upcoming object to an absolute location with respect to the roadway based on map data that describes upcoming topology of the roadway and a location of the autonomous vehicle. The method further includes associating the upcoming object with a lane of the roadway based on the absolute location mapped to the upcoming object and based on lane geometry data for the roadway. The method further includes operating the autonomous vehicle based on a relationship between the lane associated with the upcoming object and a current lane in which the autonomous vehicle is located.
Systems and methods to address jackknifing in autonomous vehicles
The technology relates to articulated autonomous vehicles that can potentially jackknife. To avoid or mitigate such hazardous conditions, the current state of the vehicle is evaluated against the vehicle's planned trajectory, for instance as it drives along a freeway or surface streets. When the evaluation indicates a likelihood of jackknifing, an automated braking approach is implemented using elective braking to stabilize the vehicle. The braking approach can depend on whether the situation involves tractor jackknifing or trailer jackknifing, and one or more different braking mechanisms can be employed for a selective modulation of the braking profile to address actual jackknifing or to prevent the vehicle from entering a jackknifing situation.
Method and apparatus for recognizing a towing operation of a vehicle
A method and an associated apparatus for recognizing a towing operation of a vehicle. A towing operation is recognized by detecting an acceleration of the vehicle immediately after activation of the vehicle ignition and at the same time detecting that there is no actuation of the accelerator pedal or no torque request from a driver assistance system. Upon recognition of the towing operation, an automatic function that intervenes in the acceleration, deceleration, or steering of the towed vehicle is blocked.
