TRACTOR UNIT WITH ON-BOARD REGENERATIVE BRAKING ENERGY STORAGE FOR STOPOVER HVAC OPERATION WITHOUT ENGINE IDLE
20200398656 · 2020-12-24 ·

A through the road (TTR) hybridization strategy is proposed to facilitate introduction of hybrid electric vehicle technology in a significant portion of current and expected trucking fleets. In some cases, the technologies can be retrofitted onto an existing vehicle (e.g., a trailer, a tractor-trailer configuration, etc.). In some cases, the technologies can be built into new vehicles. In some cases, one vehicle may be built or retrofitted to operate in tandem with another and provide the hybridization benefits contemplated herein. By supplementing motive forces delivered through a primary drivetrain and fuel-fed engine with supplemental torque delivered at one or more electrically-powered drive axles, improvements in overall fuel efficiency and performance may be delivered, typically without significant redesign of existing components and systems that have been proven in the trucking industry.

AUTOMATICALLY LOCKING HITCH

A hitch assembly for coupling a trailer to a tow vehicle comprises a king ball including a base and a king pin extending vertically from a top surface of the base, the king pin including a ball positioned on a distal end opposite the base, the ball adapted to be pivotally received into a hitch of the trailer. A hitch block includes a draw bar and a housing, the drawbar adapted to be horizontally inserted into a receiver mounted onto the tow vehicle, the housing including a throat adapted to receive the base of the king ball. A locking mechanism is adapted to automatically engage the king pin when the base of the king ball is inserted into the throat of the housing to secure the base of the king ball within the throat of the housing and locking the king ball and the hitch block together.

BRAKE CONTROL TECHNIQUE TO STOP A VEHICLE FOR ASSISTING AUTOMATIC TRAILER HITCHING

A vehicle control system configured to control a braking operation of a hitch ball to a coupler on a trailer. The system may comprise a vehicle brake control system, a maneuvering system, an image sensor configured to capture an image data, and a velocity sensor. The system may also comprise a vehicle mass sensor configured to detect a vehicle mass and a controller. The controller may be configured to control the maneuvering system of the vehicle along a vehicle path. The controller may also identify a coupler distance based on the image data depicting a coupler of the trailer. The controller may also calculate a stopping distance for the braking operation based on a plurality of braking parameters, wherein the braking parameters comprise the velocity, the break pressure, and the vehicle mass.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ASSISTED DECELERATION BASED TRAILER BRAKING

Methods and apparatus are provided for assisted deceleration based trailer braking. The apparatus includes a trailer brake controller for applying a trailer brake in response to a brake control signal, a wheel speed sensor, an accelerometer for determining an acceleration, and a trailer controller for generating the brake control signal in response to a change in the acceleration indicating a negative value, the trailer controller further operative to couple the brake control signal to the trailer brake controller.

VEHICLE HITCH BALL DETECTION SYSTEM

A vehicle control system includes an imager mounted with and directed to a rear of the vehicle and outputting image data, a vehicle speed sensor mounted with the vehicle and outputting vehicle speed data, and an image processor receiving the image data and the vehicle speed data. The image processor is programmed to monitor a signal from the vehicle speed sensor and, when the signal from the vehicle speed sensor indicates a vehicle speed above a predetermined minimum speed, execute a feature extraction function to locate a hitch ball mounted to the vehicle in the image data.

METHOD FOR SUGGESTING ACTIVATION OF AN EXHAUST BRAKE

A method for exhaust braking includes monitoring, by a controller of a vehicle, an engine speed of an internal combustion engine; comparing, by the controller, the engine speed with the a predetermined braking speed threshold to determine whether the engine speed is greater than the a predetermined braking speed threshold; and, in response to determining that the engine speed is greater than the a predetermined braking speed threshold, switching the vehicle to an exhaust braking mode.
