Electronic job aid system for operator of a vehicle system

A job aid system and method determine conditions in which a vehicle system is operating or will operate during movement of the vehicle system along one or more routes. A context-sensitive action checklist is selected or generated based on one or more of the conditions. Input from the operator of the vehicle system is received in response to one or more action items in the context-sensitive action checklist that is presented to the operator. An alertness level of the operator is determined based on the input that is received from the operator. One or more alerting actions can be implemented to increase the alertness level of the operator.

A signal-controlled crew warning system for warning people of approaching rail vehicles on an operational track located in a warning sector of a work track. The warning system includes a track-building machine for working on the work track, a positioning system for determining the position of the track-building machine, a computer-aided monitoring system for generating warning information, warning measures for generating acoustic or optical or haptic warning signals, and a radio system for wireless data transfer. The computer-aided monitoring system is configured to set boundaries of the warning sector on a basis of the current position of the track-building machine and to automatically generate warning information for the warning sector. The track-building machine has a central control unit for processing the warning information, which control unit is coupled to the computer-aided monitoring system via the radio system. The warning sector thus moves along with the track-building machine as it travels.

The one or more processors are configured to establish a communication link with the controlling vehicle, and, in a first mode of operation, to automatically control movement of the designated remote vehicle responsive to movement-control messages received from the controlling vehicle over the communication link. The one or more processors are also configured, responsive to receipt of a designated suspend message from the controlling vehicle, to switch the designated remote vehicle from the first mode of operation to a second mode of operation where movement of the designated remote vehicle is controlled independently of the controlling vehicle while maintaining the communication link.
