Vehicle communication systems and control systems

A vehicle control system includes a controller that communicates between a first vehicle and a second vehicle and/or a monitoring device in a vehicle system. The controller determines a communication loss and, responsive to determining the communication loss, switches to communicating via a different communication path. The controller also determines an operational restriction on movement of the vehicle system based on the communication loss that is determined, obtains a transitional plan that designates operational settings of the vehicle system at one or more different locations along a route being traveled by the vehicle system, different distances along the route being traveled by the vehicle system, and/or different times. The controller automatically changes the movement of the vehicle system according to the operational settings designated by the transitional plan to reduce the movement of the vehicle system to or below the operational restriction.

The processor is configured to determine at least one parameter of the mobile railway asset based at least in part on the running dimension of the wheelset.

WORKER PROTECTION SYSTEM

A worker protection system may include a train-mounted unit for use on a train, and one or more wayside units, configured for placement on or near a track traversed by the train. Each of the train-mounted unit and the one or more wayside units may include a corresponding communication component, with one or more antennas, configured to transmit and/or receive wireless signals, with the signals comprise ultra-wideband (UWB) signals, and one or more circuits configured for processing signals and data, and for performing applications or functions relating to operations of the corresponding unit. The train-mounted unit may operate cooperatively with the one or more wayside units, to provide alerts to one or more workers operating on or near the track, based on communication of the UWB signals with at least one of the one or more wayside units.

A position and time calculator, based on a navigation satellite signal, calculates a position of a navigation satellite and a position and a time where an antenna receives the navigation satellite signal. An upper limit error determiner evaluates an upper limit of error caused in positioning a reception position of the antenna based on an amount obtained by multiplying a difference between the time calculated based on the navigation satellite signal and the time measured by a time measurer by a coefficient determined based on arrangement of navigation satellites, and information on the position on the track stored in a memory. A position determiner corrects the moved distance measured by the speed measurer based on the evaluation of the upper limit of error in positioning, and determines the position of the antenna.

A RAILWAY TRACK CONDITION MONITORING SYSTEM FOR DETECTING A PARTIAL OR COMPLETE DISRUPTION OF A RAIL OF THE RAILWAY TRACK
20190232988 · 2019-08-01 · ·

A railway track condition monitoring system including a plurality of sensors installed on a rail of the track and spaced by a predetermined distance from each other. The sensors having respective signal acquisition and recording means for the acquisition and recording of an acoustic signal being generated by an approaching train and propagated by the rail or by a ground carrying the rail. A signal transfer means for the transfer of an acquired and recorded signal to the passing train by wireless transfer at the time of passing of the train in proximity to sensors, and a signal analyzing means for analysing transferred ones of the acquired and recorded signal on-board the passing train. The signal analyzing means may be adapted to compare in a processing unit the signals from adjacent sensors and on that basis indicate a rail discontinuity.

Radio relay

A technique comprising: detecting at a first radio node a first signal indicating the number of hops at which a second radio node that transmitted the first signal first detected a second, earlier signal; and deciding whether to transmit said first signal onwards from said first radio node based at least partly on (i) a direction indicator in said first signal, (ii) a comparison of the respective numbers of hops at which said first and second radio nodes first detected said earlier second signal, and (iii) the result of a search at said first radio node for onwards transmission of said first signal by another radio node in the direction indicated by said hop-count number direction indicator.
