An on-board electronics system of an aerial work platform moves the wheels between a retracted and extended position by pivoting a respective arm. The method comprises the following successive steps: a) orienting each wheel tangentially to the pivoting path of the corresponding arm, b) moving the wheel by pivotally actuating the corresponding arm, and c) reorienting the wheel so as to enable another translation of the aerial work platform. The steps are performed in different orders between the wheels so that at any time at least one of the following conditions is complied with: —the brake system of at least one wheel is active, —at least one wheel is rotated by a motorised drive, —the orientation of the wheels relative to one another prevents any translation of the aerial work platform (1) on the ground as a result of gravitational force.

Locking pins hold the bars in either expanded or contracted position. An optional locking bar can be used for locking in the expanded position.

Power to expand and contract could be provided by, but not limited to; cable winch, screw jack, hydraulic ram(s) and gear drive(s).

A system and method for controlling a vehicle, where the system includes independent driving modules each including a connection device having a rotation center spaced apart from a driving shaft in a forward/rearward direction and configured to connect the wheel and a vehicle body to move the wheel in the forward/rearward or an upward/downward direction, a shock absorber extending in a longitudinal direction and configured to contract or stretch, to connect the vehicle body and the connection device, and to restrict an upward/downward movement of the connection device, and a driving device configured to rotate the wheel, a road surface detector configured to detect a height displacement or a state of a road, and a controller configured to control velocities of the front and rear wheels of the independent driving modules, and to change a height of the vehicle based on the height displacement or the state of the road.
