Surgical system including an electric motor and a surgical instrument

A surgical system comprising an electric motor and a surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises a housing, a shaft extending from the housing, a fastener cartridge, an anvil, a translatable drive member, and a rotatable actuator knob. The housing comprises an input shaft operably coupled to the electric motor. The input shaft is rotatable in a first mode by the electric motor. The fastener cartridge comprises a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein. The anvil is configured to deform the fasteners. The translatable drive member is configured to move the anvil toward and away from the fastener cartridge. The translatable drive member is movable by the electric motor in the first mode. The rotatable actuator knob is configured to be rotated multiple full rotations in a second mode to manually cause the input shaft to move the anvil.

A medical instrument and a semi-finished instrument. The semi-finished instrument includes an instrument body part blank for forming an instrument body part of the medical instrument. The instrument body part blank is made of a metal, in particular an instrument steel. The semi-finished instrument also includes a distal end region and a recess on the distal end region for accommodating a hard metal element. The recess has an abutment face for the hard metal element. The instrument body part blank includes a solder chamber for accommodating solder. The solder chamber is fluidically connected to the recess.

JAW APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUES TO MAINTAIN ENGAGEMENT UPON TISSUE SEPARATION

Disclosed embodiments include apparatuses for and methods of separating tissue with opposing jaw members having distal ends that translate toward a surface of the tissue as the jaw members are rotated outwardly to maintain engagement with the tissue. In an illustrative embodiment, an apparatus includes jaw members rotatably coupled adjacent to their proximal ends. The jaw members define opposing outwardly-facing curved channels disposed between their proximal and distal ends that slidably engage a distal pin. A bracket defines a distal socket that receives the distal pin. As the jaw members are motivated in a distal direction relative to the bracket toward the distal pin, engagement of the distal pin with the outwardly-facing curved channels causes the jaw members to rotate to cause the distal ends of the jaw members move outwardly transversely to the distal direction while the distal ends translate in the distal direction.

Surgical forceps

A forceps includes an end effector assembly having first and second jaw members movable between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. A knife assembly having a cutting blade disposed at a distal end thereof is also provided. The knife assembly is translatable relative to the end effector assembly between a retracted position and an extended position, wherein the cutting blade extends between the jaw members to cut tissue grasped therebetween. The knife assembly includes a proximal component and a first distal component that includes the cutting blade. The proximal and first distal components are removably coupled to one another to facilitate replacement of the first distal component. Methods of preparing such forceps for reuse are also provided.

Systems and methods for grasp adjustment based on grasp properties

Systems and methods for grasp adjustment based on grasp properties include a computer-assisted device. The device includes a two-jawed end effector located at a distal end of the device, a drive unit for operating the two-jawed end effector, and an image processing unit. The image processing unit is configured to receive imaging data of the end effector and recognize the end effector and a material grasped by the end effector in the received imaging data. The device is configured to adjust a force magnitude limit or a torque magnitude limit of the drive unit based on the received imaging data. In some embodiments, the image processing unit is further configured to determine one or more of a position, an orientation, a size, or a shape of the material based on the received imaging data. In some embodiments, at least one jaw of the end effector includes fiducial indicia.
