A surgical instrument includes an ultrasonic waveguide extending through a body assembly. An ultrasonic blade connects to the ultrasonic waveguide. A clamp arm assembly of the surgical instrument is able to move from an opened position for receiving a tissue toward a closed position for clamping the tissue. The clamp arm assembly includes a clamp body and a clamp pad facing the ultrasonic blade. A clamp arm actuator of the surgical instrument is able to move from a first position toward a second position to direct the clamp arm assembly from the opened position toward the closed position. A modular coupling of the surgical instrument connects to the clamp pad such that at least the clamp pad can be disconnected relative to the ultrasonic blade for replacement thereof.
Vibration transmitter and ultrasonic treatment instrument
A vibration transmitter can include a straight portion, a curved portion, a first curved surface provided on an external surface of the curved portion, a second curved surface facing a side opposite to the first curved surface and a first portion provided on the first curved surface. The first portion can extend towards a side opposite to the side toward which the curved portion is curved and a distance between the first portion and an imaginary curved surface can increase from the proximal side toward the distal side, and the imaginary curved surface being parallel with the second curved surface.
TREATMENT TOOL AND TREATMENT TOOL ASSEMBLY METHOD
A treatment tool includes: a pair of grippers configured to grip living tissue, at least one of the pair of grippers being configured in an openable and closable manner; a transmission portion connected to the at least one of the pair of grippers, the transmission portion being configured to move forward and backward along a first direction to open and close the pair of grippers; an operating portion configured to receive user operation for gripping the living tissue; an elastic body configured to transmit, to the transmission portion, an operating force applied to the operating portion by the user operation while being compressively deformed in accordance with the operating force; and an adjustment mechanism configured to adjust an amount of compressive deformation of the elastic body when the user operation is performed on the operating portion, to thereby adjust a gripping force of the pair of grippers.
SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS AND METHODS INCORPORATING ULTRASONIC AND ELECTROSURGICAL FUNCTIONALITY
A surgical instrument includes an ultrasonic transducer supported by a housing and an elongated assembly extending distally therefrom. The elongated assembly includes a jaw and a waveguide coupled to the transducer and defining a blade having upper and lower tissue-contacting surface and first and second lateral surfaces disposed therebetween that are coated with a material. The jaw is pivotable relative to the blade and includes a structural base having a backspan and first and second uprights extending from the backspan. The jaw further includes a jaw liner supported within the structural base and positioned to oppose the upper tissue-contacting surface with the first and second uprights disposed on either side of the blade. In an ultrasonic mode, ultrasonic energy produced by the transducer is transmitted along the waveguide to the blade. In an electrosurgical mode, electrosurgical energy is conducted between the blade and the first and second uprights.
ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCER AND ULTRASONIC TREATMENT INSTRUMENT
The ultrasonic transducer has a cylindrical shape having a first end surface and a second end surface, and includes a piezoelectric material that generates ultrasonic vibration for treating biological tissue with ultrasonic energy, a first electrode that is disposed in contact with the first end surface and to which an ultrasonic driving voltage is applied for generating ultrasonic vibration to the piezoelectric material, a second electrode that is disposed in contact with the second end surface and to which a reference voltage is applied for generating ultrasonic vibration to the piezoelectric material, an insulating plate that opposes the second end surface with the second electrode interposed therebetween, a third electrode that opposes the second electrode with the insulating plate and to which high-frequency power for treating biological tissue is supplied with high-frequency energy, and a short-circuit prevention unit that prevents short-circuiting between the first and third electrodes.
ELECTRODES AND METHODS FOR USE WITH A MULTI-LAYER CLAMP ARM PAD TO ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE OF A SURGICAL DEVICE
A surgical device, is disclosed herein. The surgical device can include an end effector including a clamp jaw, a trigger configured to open and close the clamp jaw, a sensor configured to detect a relative position of the trigger, and a control circuit communicably coupled to the sensor and a generator, wherein the control circuit is configured to cause the generator to administer energy associated with a surgical operation to be performed on the tissue, receive a signal from the sensor, determine that the clamp jaws are not positioned to administer the energy associated with the surgical operation, and cause the generator to administer energy configured to release the tissue from an ultrasonic blade, wherein the energy configured to release the tissue from the clamp jaw is different than the energy associated with a surgical operation to be performed on the tissue.
Usage and technique analysis of surgeon / staff performance against a baseline to optimize device utilization and performance for both current and future procedures
Various systems and methods for evaluating a surgical staff are disclosed. A computer system, such as a surgical hub, can be configured to be communicably coupled to a surgical device and a camera. The computer system can be programmed to determine contextual information pertaining to a surgical procedure based at least in part on perioperative data received from the surgical device during a surgical procedure. Further, the computer system can visually determine a physical characteristic of a surgical staff member via the camera and compare the physical characteristic to a baseline to evaluate the surgical staff member.
Method of compressing tissue within a stapling device and simultaneously displaying of the location of the tissue within the jaws
A surgical system is disclosed including an end effector, a control circuit, a closure member, and a firing member. The end effector includes a first jaw, a second jaw, and an electrode. The first jaw is rotatable relative to the second jaw between an open position and a close position to capture tissue therebetween. The electrode is configured to conduct a sub-therapeutic RF current to the tissue. The control circuit is operably coupled to the electrode. The control circuit is configured to measure impedance of the tissue over time based on the sub-therapeutic RF current. The closure member is configured to move the first jaw towards the second jaw at a closure rate based on the impedance of the tissue. The firing member is configured to move within the end effectors towards a fired position at a firing rate based on the impedance of the tissue.
