Mono-Winged Drone
An aircraft with a variety of control surfaces including but not limited to multiple winglet rudders. Each winglet can have multiple independently controlled rudders to improve the flight stability and maneuverability of the aircraft. Additionally, improved power supply systems can be implemented to allow for sustained flight.
Vortex generator
A vortex generator, includes a vane, mountable on an aerodynamic surface of an aircraft, and an actuator that rotates the vane between a stowed position and a deployed position. The actuator includes a linear actuator, composed at least in part of a shape memory alloy (SMA), that when thermally activated facilitates rotation of the vane between the stowed position to the deployed position. Thermal activation of the SMA is caused via one or more of joule heating, conduction, and induction in response to one or more of an electronic command signal and a wireless command signal. The electronic command signal and the wireless command signal may be transmitted in response to ambient conditions, aircraft flight conditions, and aircraft mission.
Vortex generator
A vortex generator, includes a vane, mountable on an aerodynamic surface of an aircraft, and an actuator that rotates the vane between a stowed position and a deployed position. Morphing control surface
The invention relates to an aerodynamic profiled body for an aircraft, in particular a winglet, comprising a front profiled element having a profile front edge, a rear profiled element having a profile rear edge, and an adjusting unit, which connects the front profiled element to the rear profiled element and by means of which the rear profiled element can be moved in relation to the front profiled element, wherein the adjusting unit has a front mounting device connected to the front profiled element, a rear mounting device connected to the rear profiled element, and a force-transmitting device, which connects the front mounting device and the rear mounting device to each other.
WINGTIP DEVICE FOR AN AIRCRAFT
An aircraft wing is disclosed including a closed surface wing tip device which includes an element or actuator within the wing tip for deforming/morphing the shape of the wing tip between geometrical configurations having different aerodynamic properties, for example including one with better overall fuel efficiency for a shorter journey and one with overall fuel efficiency better suited for a longer journey. The device includes a lower winglet with an essentially planar portion spaced apart from the main body of the wing by a blended transition region which is shaped such that the curvature of the local dihedral increases in the outboard direction. The device includes an upper aerofoil structure which with the winglet essentially forms the closed surface. There is also disclosed an aircraft wing tip device having a sigmoid shaped (e.g. S-shaped) aerofoil structure blending in with a main wing of the aircraft.
FAIRING FOR FOLDING WING TIP
An aircraft with wing tip devices, for example, folding wing tips, is disclosed. The folding wing tip may have a flight configuration for use during flight, and a ground configuration for use in ground-based operations. The ground configuration creates a shorter wing span than when the aircraft is in the flight configuration. A hinge arrangement protrudes beyond an outer surface of the fixed wing and wing tip device. In order to reduce the aerodynamic effect of the protruding hinge a fairing may be provided. In the flight configuration the fairing comprises a rear portion with a concave surface, such that the fairing acts as a lift-generating surface when the aircraft is in flight.
VERTICAL AND SHORT TAKEOFF AND LANDING (VSTOL) AIRCRAFT
Vertical short takeoff and landing (VSTOL) aircraft include primary airfoils extending outwardly from a forward region of the aircraft fuselage, and secondary empennage airfoils extending outwardly from an aft region of the aircraft fuselage so as to be separated from the forward primary airfoils and thereby define a space therebetween which accommodates non-cyclic controllable propellers operably driven by a respective engine of a propulsion unit. The propulsion units are mounted for pivotal movement within the defined space between the primary airfoil and the secondary empennage airfoils so as to achieve a first operational position wherein the thrust line of the propellers is orientated substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage and a second operational position wherein the thrust line of the propellers is oriented substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. The propulsion units may be mounted aft of the aircraft center of gravity (CG).
HINGE FAIRING
An aircraft with wing tip devices, for example, folding wing tips, is disclosed. The folding wing tip may have a flight configuration for use during flight, and a ground configuration for use in ground-based operations. The ground configuration creates a shorter wing span than when the aircraft is in the flight configuration. A hinge arrangement protrudes beyond an outer surface of the fixed wing and wing tip device. In order to reduce the aerodynamic effect of the protruding hinge a fairing may be provided. In the flight configuration the fairing comprises a front portion blended into and extending rearwardly from the leading edge of the fixed wing and the wing tip device.
Retrofit flight control surface
A method of retrofitting a wing of a fixed wing aircraft is disclosed including the steps of providing an existing aircraft wing with a main fixed wing portion, and the main fixed wing portion having a tip end and an existing movable flight control surface connected adjacent the tip end. The existing movable flight control surface is then removed from the main fixed wing portion, and a wing tip device and movable flight control surface are selected as a pair to replace the existing movable flight control surface, with the selected movable flight control surface having an aerodynamic surface of different shape to the shape of the flight control surface removed from the wing. The selected wing tip device and movable flight control surface are then fitted to the main fixed wing portion.
Aircraft nacelles having adjustable chines
Aircraft nacelles having adjustable chines are described. An example apparatus includes a multi-segment chine having a first segment and a second segment. The first segment is fixedly coupled to a nacelle. The second segment is rotatable relative to the first segment about an axis of rotation. The axis of rotation is substantially perpendicular to a local area of an outer surface of the nacelle.
