A method for attaching a flat and flexible band on at least one bone part is disclosed. The band includes two end portions. A rigid base body crossed by an opening, and a retaining part that can be inserted in the opening is employed. The retaining part is at least partially in the shape of a squeezable wedge comprising a central bore for passage of the end portions facing the flexible band, the bore having a transverse cross-section that can be deformed between a first cross-section for free passage of the end portions when the part has not been inserted in the opening and a second cross-section for locking the end portions by compression when the part is entirely or substantially entirely inserted in the opening.

An ultrasonic surgical instrument that includes an ultrasonic transducer, a handle assembly supporting the ultrasonic transducer, a clamp arm assembly, and a mechanical lockout assembly. The handle assembly includes a housing and an ultrasonic blade acoustically coupled with the ultrasonic transducer. The clamp arm assembly includes a clamp arm. The mechanical lockout assembly is configured to switch between at least an unlocked configuration and a locked configuration. In the locked configuration, the handle assembly and the clamp arm assembly are not completely coupled together and the operator is physically prevented from activating the instrument using an operator input feature. In the unlocked configuration, the clamp arm assembly and the shaft assembly are completely coupled together and the operator is able to activate the instrument using the operator input feature.

A surgical instrument that includes a shaft assembly that defines a shaft axis and includes a proximal articulation joint that defines a first articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and a distal articulation joint that defines a second articulation axis that is transverse to the shaft axis and the first articulation axis. The instrument further includes an anvil that is non-removably attached to the shaft assembly and a channel that is removably attachable to the shaft assembly and configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge.

Robotic systems and methods for distraction in intervertebral disc prosthesis implantation

Systems and methods for robotically distracting a disc space are provided for implantation of an intervertebral prosthetic disc. The system includes a 3D modeling system for creating a 3D model of first and second vertebra adjacent the disc space and identifying positions of the first and second vertebrae. A robotic distractor precisely opens the disc space just large enough to receive a selected intervertebral disc. A computing system stores and processes the 3D model and the positions of the first and second vertebrae before and after distraction. A surgeon interface on the computing system allows the surgeon to select an intervertebral disc prosthesis to be implanted and a desired distraction distance or force to be achieved.

To achieve in vivo repair of severed mammalian nerve tissue, a system can be employed to induce distraction neurogenesis. At least a portion of the system can be anchored at an injury site, such as between distal and proximal nerve ends. The system can be attached to the proximal nerve end and can place the nerve under micro-tension for an extended period of treatment. The system may also deliver medication or treatment to encourage neurogenesis and to reduce pain in the subject receiving treatment. After the course of treatment, the device can be removed from the injury site, and the nerve ends rejoined.

Surgical staples having compressible or crushable members for securing tissue therein and stapling instruments for deploying the same

A staple having a crown, a deformable leg extending from the crown, and a spring extending from the crown configured to compress tissue between the spring and the deformable member. Owing to the flexibility of the spring, the staple can accommodate a wide range of tissue thicknesses while still compressing the tissue captured therein. As a result, a single staple design can be used in a wide variety of surgical procedures thereby reducing the amount of staple designs that must be provided to the surgeon. In at least one embodiment, the staple includes a crushable member. This crushable member can include a plastically deformable first portion and an elastically deformable second portion. The present invention can also include, in various embodiments, a crown, a first deformable member extending from the crown, and means for compressing the tissue against the first deformable member.

A method of controlling motor velocity in a surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes a displacement member, a motor coupled to the displacement member, a control circuit coupled to the motor, a position sensor coupled to the control circuit, and a timer coupled to the control circuit. The method includes receiving a first position of a displacement member from a position sensor, starting a timer, advancing the displacement member to a second position by setting a motor velocity to a first velocity, receiving the second positon from the position sensor, stopping the timer when the displacement member reaches the second position, receiving elapsed time from the timer, wherein the elapsed time is the time taken by the displacement to move from the first position to the second positon, and controlling, by the control circuit, velocity of the motor based on the elapsed time.
