The base can be configured to couple to a surface of a patient at a preliminary port location for a robotic arm. The member can be coupled to the base and can comprise a first end and a second end opposite the first end. The at least one tracking element can be coupled to the member and can be configured to allow tracking of the member relative to the preliminary port location.

SLED DETECTION DEVICE

A surgical stapling device includes a staple reload and a shipping wedge. In embodiments, the shipping wedge is configured to disable the use of a staple reload if the staple reload does not have an actuation sled. In other embodiments, the actuation sled includes a readable identifier that facilitates confirmation of the presence of an actuation sled within a staple reload from a location externally of the staple reload.

Surgical instrument including a variable speed firing member

A surgical instrument for cutting and stapling patient tissue is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises an end effector including a staple cartridge and staples, a firing element configured to move through the staple cartridge to cut the patient tissue and eject the staples from the staple cartridge during a staple firing stroke, an elongate shaft extending from the end effector, and a handle extending from the elongate shaft. The handle comprises a motor configured to output a rotary motion. The firing element is operably responsive to the rotary motion. The firing element is further configured to be driven at different speeds during the staple firing stroke. The handle further comprises a display. The display is configured to display the different speeds of the firing element during the staple firing stroke as a graphical representation.

SURGICAL FORCEPS

A bipolar electrosurgical instrument includes first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from its distal end. Each jaw member is adapted to connect to a source of electrosurgical energy such that the jaw members are capable of selectively conducting energy through tissue held therebetween. A knife channel is configured to reciprocate a cutting mechanism therealong. An actuator selectively advances the cutting mechanism. A switch is disposed on the first shaft and is configured to be depressed between a first position and at least one subsequent position upon biasing engagement with a mechanical interface disposed on the second shaft. The first position of the switch relays information to the user corresponding to a desired pressure on tissue and the at least one subsequent position is configured to activate the source of electrosurgical energy to supply electrosurgical energy to the jaw members.

A method for customizing an interactive control boundary based on a patient-specific anatomy includes obtaining a standard control boundary and determining an intersection between a reference feature associated with the standard control boundary and a virtual representation of an anatomy of the patient. The method further includes identifying an anatomic perimeter at the intersection between the identified reference feature and the virtual representation of the anatomy. An anatomic feature on the virtual representation of the anatomy is determined from the intersection of the reference feature and the virtual representation of the anatomy. The standard control boundary is modified based on at least one anatomic feature to generate a customized control boundary.

Shape sensing assisted medical procedure

A system and method for shape sensing assistance in a medical procedure includes a three-dimensional image (111) of a distributed pathway system (148). A shape sensing enabled elongated device (102) is included for insertion into the pathway system to measure a shape of the elongated device in the pathway system. A pathway determination module (144) is configured to compute a planned path to a target in the three-dimensional image and compute permissible movements of the elongated device at diverging pathways in the pathway system to provide feedback for deciding which of the diverging paths to take in accordance with the planned path.
