Surgical instruments and methods for performing tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and other surgical procedures

A surgical instrument includes a housing, a shaft extending therefrom, an end effector assembly supported by the shaft, a movable handle, and a drive assembly. The drive assembly includes a translatable drive member for actuating the end effector assembly, and a torsion spring including first and second legs. The first leg is configured to translate through the housing in response to movement of the movable handle relative to the housing. The second leg is configured to translate through the housing in cooperation with the first leg to move the drive member longitudinally when a force acting on the drive member is less than a threshold force, and to remain in fixed position, thereby tensioning the torsion spring and retaining the drive member in fixed position when the force acting on the drive member is equal to or exceeds the threshold force.

Method for verifying hard tissue location using implant imaging
11864934 · 2024-01-09 · ·

A low radiation, intra-operative method using two-dimensional imaging to register the positions of surgical implants relative to their pre-operative planned positions. Intraoperatively, a pair of two-dimensional fluoroscope images in different planes or a single three-dimensional image is acquired and compared to a set of three-dimensional pre-operative images, to allow registration of the implant region anatomy. A second set of intraoperative fluoroscope images is acquired of the surgical area with implants in place. The second set of images is compared with the first set of intraoperative images to ascertain alignment of the implants. Registration between first and second intraoperative image sets is accomplished using the implants themselves as fiducial markers, and the process repeated until an acceptable configuration of the implants is obtained. The method is particularly advantageous for spinal surgery.

End effector detection systems for surgical instruments

A surgical instrument system can comprise a surgical instrument, a first end effector, and a second end effector, wherein the end effectors are attachable to the surgical instrument. The first end effector can comprise a first set of stored data pertaining to the first end effector, wherein the surgical instrument is configured to ascertain the first set of data and enter a first operating state. The second end effector can comprise a second set of stored data pertaining to the second end effector, wherein the surgical instrument is configured to ascertain the second set of data and enter a second operating state. The surgical instrument is further configured to enter a default operating state if said surgical instrument is unable to ascertain a set of stored data from an end effector.

Hemostat-style ultrasonic surgical instrument with clamp force-limiting feature

An ultrasonic surgical instrument includes a first shaft member, a jaw member extending distally from the first shaft member, a second shaft member, an ultrasonic blade extending distally from the second shaft member and positioned to oppose the jaw member, and a force-limiting hinge assembly operably coupling the shaft members with one another such that movement of the shaft members between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position moves the jaw member and the ultrasonic blade between an open position and a clamping position for clamping tissue therebetween. The force-limiting hinge assembly includes a hinge arm fixedly engaged to one of the shaft members at a first end thereof and pivotably coupled to the other of the shaft members at a second end thereof. The hinge arm is configured to flex to regulate a clamping force applied to tissue clamped between the jaw member and the ultrasonic blade.

IMAGING SYSTEM
20200345450 · 2020-11-05 ·

An imaging system includes an image generating device and two reflecting mirrors. The image generating device projects a light toward a gravity direction. The two reflecting mirrors are disposed with respect to each other and one of the two reflecting mirrors is disposed with respect to the image generating device. The light projected by the image generating device forms a virtual image through the two reflecting mirrors in sequence.

END EFFECTOR FOR USE WITH A SURGICAL FASTENING INSTRUMENT

A surgical staple including a crown and a deformable member extending from the crown, the deformable member having a notch configured to cause the deformable member to bend at the notch when the staple is deformed from a first shape into a second shape. The crown of the surgical staple, in various embodiments, further includes a forming surface, or anvil, which is configured to deform the deformable member and/or guide a distal end of the deformable member when the distal end contacts the crown.

INCREASED USABLE INSTRUMENT LIFE IN TELESURGICAL SYSTEMS
20200345437 · 2020-11-05 ·

A telesurgical system operates in a first operating mode and in a second operating mode. In the first operating mode, a moveable component is driven within a first range of an operating parameter. In the second operating mode, the moveable component is driven with a second range of the operating parameter, less than the first range. Usable instrument life is increased by decreasing mechanical degradation of the moveable component as a result of operating in the second range. A surgeon may select either operating mode.

BONE FUSION DEVICE
20200337852 · 2020-10-29 ·

A bone fusion device for insertion between bones that are to be fused together, such as, for example, the vertebrae of a spinal column. The bone fusion device comprises at least one extendable tab and one or more tab extension assemblies. Each tab extension assembly is able to be adjusted in order to individually control the extension or contraction of a side of the tab thereby enabling adjustment of the height and/or angle of the tab with respect to the body of the bone fusion device. Each tab extension assembly is able to be individually adjusted such that the side controlled by each assembly is raised or lowered until the desired tab angle is achieved. The tab is advantageously positioned and angled to correspond to the vertebrae to help brace the device until the bone has fused.
