Sounds are generated by an aerial vehicle during operation. For example, the motors and propellers of an aerial vehicle generate sounds during operation. Systems, methods, and apparatus may actively adjust the position and/or configuration of one or more propeller blades of a propulsion mechanism to generate different sounds and/or lifting forces from the propulsion mechanism.

Autonomous slat-cove-filler device for reduction of aeroacoustic noise associated with aircraft systems
A slat cove filler is utilized to reduce airframe noise resulting from deployment of a leading edge slat of an aircraft wing. The slat cove filler is preferably made of a super elastic shape memory alloy, and the slat cove filler shifts between stowed and deployed shapes as the slat is deployed. The slat cove filler may be configured such that a separate powered actuator is not required to change the shape of the slat cove filler from its deployed shape to its stowed shape and vice-versa. The outer contour of the slat cove filler preferably follows a profile designed to maintain accelerating flow in the gap between the slat cove filler and wing leading edge to provide for noise reduction.

Disclosed are systems, methods, and apparatus for actively adjusting the position of one or more propeller blade treatments of a propeller blade of an aerial vehicle during operation of the aerial vehicle. For example, the propeller blade may have one or more propeller blade treatments that may be adjusted between two or more positions. Based on the position of the propeller blade treatments, the airflow over the propeller is altered, thereby altering the sound generated by the propeller when rotating. By altering the propeller blade treatments on multiple propeller blades of the aerial vehicle, the different sounds generated by the different propeller blades may effectively cancel, reduce, and/or otherwise alter the total sound generated by the aerial vehicle.
Propeller surface area treatments for sound dampening

Flow disruption devices for the reduction of high lift system noise
Various embodiments provide systems and methods for noise reduction for lift-augmentation wing-sections (e.g., flaps, slats, elevons, etc.) by the use of flow disruption devices placed upstream of vortex generation locations. The flow disruption devices may reduce the noise radiating from side edges of lift-augmentation control wing sections. An embodiment flow disruption device may include a body configured to protrude into a flow over a vehicle's surface, wherein the body is coupled to the vehicle upstream of a side edge of a structure of the vehicle such that a wake produced by the body introduces unsteadiness and a flow velocity deficit in a vortex formation region of the side edge of the structure.
Systems and methods for supressing noise from an aircraft engine
Systems and methods for noise suppression for aircraft are disclosed. The aircraft may include a fuselage. The aircraft may include a plurality of wings connected to or formed with the fuselage. The aircraft may include at least one engine configured to generate a propulsion force to propel the aircraft. The at least one engine may include a nozzle assembly having a nozzle body with an outlet that releases an exhaust air or a jet flow. The aircraft may include a noise suppression assembly. The noise suppression assembly may be configured to interact with the exhaust air or jet flow to substantially suppress, mitigate, reduce, or otherwise modify noise generated by the aircraft.
Operating aerial vehicles with intentionally imbalanced propellers
Aerial vehicles may be operated with discrete sets of propellers, which may be selected for a specific purpose or on a specific basis. The discrete sets of propellers may be operated separately or in tandem with one another, and at varying power levels. For example, a set of propellers may be selected to optimize the thrust, lift, maneuverability or efficiency of an aerial vehicle based on a position or other operational characteristic of the aerial vehicle, or an environmental condition encountered by the aerial vehicle. At least one of the propellers may be statically or dynamically imbalanced, such that the propeller emits a predetermined sound during operation. A balanced propeller may be specifically modified to cause the aerial vehicle to emit the predetermined sound by changing one or more parameters of the balanced propeller and causing the balanced propeller to be statically or dynamically imbalanced.

An acoustic cavity tailored synthetic jet employs a body having a cavity with a wall including a taper from a first extent to an aperture. The cavity is configured to produce a matched acoustic resonance. A drive system has a piston engaged to the cavity at the first extent. The drive system and piston are configured for oscillatory motion inducing a synthetic jet at the aperture.
