Extinguishable divert system
Various implementations of an extinguishable, solid propellant divert system for a flight vehicle are disclosed. Also disclosed are methods for using the divert system to control the flight of a flight vehicle. In one implementation, a divert system includes a hot gas generator pneumatically linked to one or more divert thrusters and an extinguishment valve. The extinguishment valve can be opened to rapidly depressurize the hot gas generator and extinguish the solid propellant burning inside. In another implementation, a method of controlling the trajectory of the flight vehicle includes repeatedly igniting and extinguishing the solid propellant in a hot gas generator and using the hot gas to provide divert thrust for the flight vehicle.

ELECTRIC VERTICAL TAKEOFF AND LANDING AIRCRAFT
An aircraft has a boom, a propulsion assembly coupled to a first end of the boom, and a first wing coupled to a second end of the boom. The propulsion assembly is coupled to the boom by a rotating joint. A second wing is optionally coupled to the rotating joint. The first wing is coupled to the boom by a rotating joint. The first wing is coupled to the rotating joint by a hinge. A vehicle with roll, pitch, and yaw maneuverability able to mirror the aircraft movements may be coupled to the second end of the boom. The vehicle body may be picked up with a vehicle chassis disconnected from the vehicle body. The boom houses an energy source to power the propulsion assembly. A rudder is coupled to the second end of the boom. A paddle is disposed between the propulsion assembly and the boom.
SEVERE WEATHER AGILITY THRUSTERS, AND ASSOCIATED SYSTEMS AND METHODS
Severe weather agility thrusters, and associated systems and methods are disclosed. A representative system includes a launch vehicle having a first end and a second end generally opposite the first end, and is elongated along a vehicle axis extending between the first and second ends. A propulsion system is carried by the launch vehicle and has at least one main engine having a corresponding nozzle positioned toward the first end to launch the launch vehicle. At least one laterally-directed thruster is positioned toward the second end of the launch vehicle. The system further includes a controller in communication with the launch vehicle and programmed with instructions that, when executed, direct the launch vehicle in a first direction during vehicle ascent, direct the launch vehicle in a second direction, opposite the first direction, during vehicle descent, and direct activation of the at least one laterally-directed thruster to guide the launch vehicle during descent.
Methods and Systems for Deploying Satellite Constellations
A satellite system may have a constellation of communications satellites in orbits such as highly inclined eccentric geosynchronous orbits and low earth orbits. To place satellites in inclined eccentric geosynchronous orbits, a series of launch vehicles may be launched. Each launch vehicle may be used to place a set of satellites, such as a set of three satellites, into a common orbital plane with distinct longitude of ascending node values. To place satellites in low earth orbits, a series of launch vehicles may be launched, each of which releases satellites in sequence from a stack of satellites into a common orbital plane. After desired separations have been produced between the released satellites, circularization procedures may be performed using the propulsion systems of the satellites to place the satellites into final orbit.
Ruggedized Avionics with Stiffening Frames for Use on Kinetically Launched Vehicles
Ruggedized avionics assemblies for use on kinetically launched space vehicles are disclosed. The avionic assemblies are able to maintain structural integrity and functionality under high acceleration forces generated during kinetic launch, including acceleration forces of >5,000 times Earth's gravity in a single direction of loading. The avionics assembly is ruggedized to withstand this level of acceleration force during launch via a plurality of constraining elements to constrain a plurality of printed circuit boards aligned in parallel to an acceleration vector. Further, a high specific strength and stiffness composition of the plurality of constraining elements aids in supporting the printed circuit boards and preventing them from bending and dislodging electronic components mounted to the printed circuit boards.
Vehicle launch system and method
The present disclosure relates to a launch system and method. The launch system and method can include at least a preliminary accelerator tube system (PAT) that can be combined with a main accelerator tube system (MAT). The PAT alone or combined with the MAT can be used for launch of a vehicle for testing and/or for delivery of a payload.
LAUNCH VEHICLES WITH RING-SHAPED EXTERNAL ELEMENTS, AND ASSOCIATED SYSTEMS AND METHODS
Launch vehicles with ring-shaped external elements, and associated systems and methods are disclosed. An aerospace system in accordance with a particular embodiment includes a launch vehicle having a first end and a second end generally opposite the first end, with the launch vehicle being elongated along a vehicle axis extending between the first and second ends, and having an external, outwardly facing surface. The system can further include an annular element carried by the launch vehicle, the annular element having an external, inwardly-facing surface radially spaced apart from, and extending at least partially circumferentially around, the vehicle axis. The annular element can have a first edge surface facing a first direction along the vehicle axis, and a second edge surface facing a second direction along the vehicle axis, the second direction being opposite the first direction. A propulsion system can be carried by the launch vehicle, and can have at least one nozzle positioned toward the first end of the vehicle to launch the vehicle. A controller can be in communication with the launch vehicle and programmed to direct the vehicle in the first direction during vehicle ascent, and in the second direction during vehicle descent.
SYSTEM FOR IMPARTING LINEAR MOMENTUM TRANSFER FOR HIGHER ORBITAL INSERTION
A system for imparting linear momentum transfer may include a catching mechanism of a target space vehicle and a tether that is configured to impart a linear momentum transfer from the tether to the target space vehicle. The tether may be fixedly or detachably connected to a Kinetic Energy Storage and Transfer (KEST) vehicle that maneuvers and potentially retrieves the tether. Alternatively, the tether may be separate from the KEST vehicle and may be retrieved by a suitable retrieving mechanism, such as a robotic arm.
Integrated vehicle fluids
A system and methods are disclosed for an upper stage space launch vehicle that uses gases from the propellant tanks to power an internal combustion engine that produces mechanical power for driving other components including a generator for generation of electrical current for operating compressors and fluid pumps and for charging batteries. These components and others comprise a thermodynamic system from which system enthalpy may be leveraged by extracting and moving heat to increase the efficient use of propellant and the longevity and performance of the launch vehicle.
