Systems and methods for creating and automating an enclosed volume with a flexible fuel tank and propellant metering for machine operations

An enclosed volume is provided for performing operations in space, or on any astronomical object, in a manner separated from aspects of the external environment. The enclosed volume can be a flexible container for a satellite. The enclosed volume can include a membrane having a fluid barrier layer and being configured to contain a propellant gas or fluid; and an expulsion device configured to expel material from the membrane. In a stowed configuration, the flexible container is contained within the satellite, and in a deployed configuration, the flexible container extends away from the satellite. The flexible container can inflate from one shape, in the undeployed configuration, to another shape, in a deployed configuration. The other shape can be toroidal or other appropriate shapes. The flexible container can provide bipropellant, blowdown, and gas/fluid metering functionality. Entertainment and game play can be enabled by the enclosed volume involving robots and other devices.

OMNI-DIRECTIONAL EXTENSIBLE GRASP MECHANISMS

Omni-directional, extensible grasp mechanisms are disclosed. Such grasp mechanisms may be used as a robotic end effector for docking, grasping, and manipulating space structures, or to interconnect other structures or vehicles. Novel interconnected lattice structures may enable large arrays to be assembled. The grasp mechanisms may be used to create structures from parallel docking linkages. This may enable reconfiguration of multiple docked space vehicles and/or structures without the use of propellant. The grasp mechanisms have the ability to make and break connections multiple times, enabling a nondestructive and reversible docking process.

Reconnaissance and payload deployment methods for robotic space exploration

A method for the deployment of reconnaissance devices including buoy cameras and robotic devices in a target mission area of a remote location in space utilizing a maneuverable descent de-booster capsule and a buoyant vessel for the deployment is disclosed, including identifying the target area from an orbiting spacecraft; deploying the de-booster into orbit over the target area; initiating gradual descent of the de-booster in the atmosphere of the remote location in space; ejecting the buoyant vessel and its payload from the de-booster; filling the buoyant portion of the buoyant vessel with a lifting gas to cause the buoyant portion to become a large balloon; activating reconnaissance devices on the bay portion of the buoyant vessel, including video and other devices for monitoring and surveiling the target mission area; maneuvering the buoyant vessel to refine mission site selection; opening cargo bay doors at a predetermined altitude to deliver payloads including buoy cameras to the target mission area; causing the at least one buoyant vessel to rise in the atmosphere over the target mission area after payload delivery; and activating communication relay functions in the buoyant vessel while maintaining ongoing reconnaissance activities.

Additive manufacturing on-orbit

A spacecraft includes an additive manufacturing (A/M) subsystem and one or both of a thermal control arrangement and a contamination control arrangement. The A/M subsystem includes an A/M tool, feedstock and a workpiece and is configured to additively manufacture the workpiece using material from the feedstock. The thermal control arrangement is operable, in an on-orbit space environment characterized by near vacuum pressure and near zero-g force, to maintain temperature of at least one of the A/M tool, the feedstock, and the workpiece within respective specified ranges. The contamination control arrangement is operable, in the on-orbit space environment, to control outgassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

SMALLSAT PAYLOAD CONFIGURATION

Techniques for deploying a plurality of smallsats from a common launch vehicle are disclosed where a structural arrangement provides a load path between an upper stage of the launch and the plurality of spacecraft. Each spacecraft is mechanically coupled with the launch vehicle upper stage only by the structural arrangement. The structural arrangement includes at least one trunk member that is approximately aligned with the longitudinal axis of the launch vehicle upper stage, a plurality of branch members, each branch member being attached to the trunk member and having at least a first end portion that is substantially outboard from the longitudinal axis; and a plurality of mechanical linkages, each linkage coupled at a first end with a first respective spacecraft and coupled at a second end with one of the plurality of branch members, the trunk member or a second respective spacecraft.

Reconfigurable spacecraft with a hold-down assembly for a rigid reflector

A spacecraft, reconfigurable from a launch configuration to an on-orbit configuration, includes a main body structure, a manipulator, a first deployable rigid reflector and an attachment arrangement, including at least one hold-down assembly (HDA). In the launch configuration, the HDA is in a fully engaged configuration such that the attachment arrangement mechanically attaches the first reflector with the spacecraft main body structure and prevents relative motion between the first reflector and the spacecraft main body. Reconfiguring the spacecraft from the launch configuration to the on-orbit configuration includes (i) actuating the HDA from the fully engaged configuration to a partially engaged configuration; (ii) grasping and moving the first reflector, with the manipulator, a distance in the first direction; and (iii) moving the first reflector from a first position proximate to the attachment arrangement to a second position proximate to a deployed position associated with the on-orbit configuration.

In one feature, the electrical connection is used to provide power or software upgrades to the client spacecraft.

In embodiments of the spacecraft, the wireless system includes a wireless hub and a wireless coordinator for wireless transmission of data between the at least one interchangeable housing component and the spacecraft subsystems. An electrical/power transfer interface unit is provided to the at least one interchangeable housing component for transferring electricity, power, data and/or providing thermal management and control.
