VERTICAL TAKEOFF AND LANDING (VTOL) AIRCRAFT SYSTEM AND METHOD
20230202688 · 2023-06-29 ·

A method of operating an aircraft including takeoff of an aircraft; transitioning the aircraft to a forward flight configuration by increasing an amount of forward propulsive force generated by a propeller assembly from equal to or less than 10% to at least 80% of a propeller assembly maximum and reducing the upward propulsive force generated by rotor assemblies from at least 80% of a rotor assembly maximum to equal to or less than 10%; flying the aircraft from a first location to a second location in the forward flight configuration; and transitioning the aircraft to a landing configuration at the second location by decreasing an amount of forward propulsive force generated by the propeller assembly and increasing the upward propulsive force generated by the rotor assemblies.

System for a guidance interface for a vertical take-off and landing aircraft
11681301 · 2023-06-20 · ·

In an aspect, a system for a guidance interface for a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft comprises a plurality of flight components that are mechanically coupled to the VTOL aircraft. The VTOL aircraft also comprises an output device that is configured to present a display of the outside environment. The output device may overlay the display with a datum, a focal point, and a guidance symbol. The datum may be associated with the flight components of the VTOL aircraft. The focal point may be indicative of a desired landing location for the VTOL aircraft. The focal point may be determined by at least a predetermined flight plan. The guidance symbol may be a symbol that includes an optimal flight path to the focal point.

VTOL fixed-wing drone with overlapping propellers attached to linear supports connecting fore and hind wings

ACTIVE THERMAL CONTROL OF UAV ENERGY STORAGE UNITS
20230187730 · 2023-06-15 ·

Systems, devices, and techniques for active thermal control of energy storage units are described. In some embodiments, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) includes a battery pack. The battery pack includes a plurality of battery cells and an enclosure coupled with the plurality of battery cells to physically retain the plurality of battery cells in an arrangement. The arrangement defines a void space between the plurality of battery cells. The UAV also includes a cooling system configured to cool the battery cells. The cooling system includes a source of forced convection fluidically coupled with the battery pack to drive a cooling fluid through the void space. The cooling system also includes a cooling controller electrically coupled with the source of forced convection to controllably activate the source of forced convection.

Telescoping tail assemblies for use on aircraft
11673662 · 2023-06-13 · ·

A telescoping tail assembly for use on an aircraft having a fore-aft length. The telescoping tail assembly includes a housing extending in an aftward direction, a tailboom slidable along the housing into various positions including an extended position and a retracted position and one or more control surfaces coupled to the tailboom. The tailboom increases the fore-aft length of the aircraft in the extended position and decreases the fore-aft length of the aircraft in the retracted position.

Sensorless motor control at low speeds and speed reversals for aerial vehicles

Systems and methods for sensorless motor control may include a back EMF (electromotive force) observer, an adaptive EMF filter, magnitude compensation, hybrid rotor position and speed determination, rotor position and speed blending, and angle compensation. In order to provide accurate and reliable rotor position and speed estimations for a motor over a wide and varied range of speeds, at low speeds, during speed reversals, and/or in the presence of external forces, loads, or torques, the sensorless motor control may utilize a hybrid rotor position and speed determination that leverages both angle-based and magnitude-based methods. Further, the outputs of the two methods may be blended based on a shaping function to generate a final estimated rotor position and speed. Then, the motor may be more accurately and reliably controlled based on the final estimated rotor position and speed.
