AUTOMATICALLY CLASSIFYING ANIMAL BEHAVIOR

Systems and methods are disclosed to objectively identify sub-second behavioral modules in the three-dimensional (3D) video data that represents the motion of a subject. Defining behavioral modules based upon structure in the 3D video data itself—rather than using a priori definitions for what should constitute a measurable unit of action—identifies a previously-unexplored sub-second regularity that defines a timescale upon which behavior is organized, yields important information about the components and structure of behavior, offers insight into the nature of behavioral change in the subject, and enables objective discovery of subtle alterations in patterned action. The systems and methods of the invention can be applied to drug or gene therapy classification, drug or gene therapy screening, disease study including early detection of the onset of a disease, toxicology research, side-effect study, learning and memory process study, anxiety study, and analysis in consumer behavior.

The present invention relates to an inductive plethysmography vest for a mammal having a mass less than 6 kg, comprising: a tube (10) made of elastic textile configured to surround the trunk of said mammal, said tube (10) extending along a longitudinal axis (X) parallel to the spinal column of said mammal; at least one inductive winding formed of a strand (20) of electrically conductive wire arranged in the form of wavelets along the circumference of said tube (10); said vest being characterised in that it comprises at least one strip (11) made of elastic textile, arranged along the circumference of the tube, defining a plurality of longitudinal loops (111), each wavelet being formed by the passage of the strand (20) of conductive wire successively in each loop (111).

ALGORITHM FOR THE IDENTIFICATION AND PHENOTYPING OF NONALCOHOLIC FATTY LIVER DISEASE PATIENTS

System and methods for diagnosing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)/nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in patients are disclosed. The system can comprise one or more processors and one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media coupled to the one or more of processors including instructions operable when executed by one or more of the processor. The system can be configured to select at least one patient with a risk indicator using an electronic health record (EHR) database, determine that the at least one patient fails to meet exclusion criteria, and display the at least one patient in response to the determination. The risk indicator can be associated with NAFLD and/or NASH. Methods for diagnosing NAFLD/NASH in patients are disclosed are also provided.

A wireless activity and environmental monitoring system and device for small, caged mammals is disclosed which combines all sensing, processing, and communication functions of a small animal home cage health and monitoring system into a device small enough in volume that it can be unobtrusively placed in animals' home cages. The device is battery-powered and communicates wirelessly and requires no extraneous supporting hardware for operation.

Method and apparatus for providing transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to an individual

Apparatus for applying Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to an individual, wherein the apparatus comprises: a head mount for disposition on the head of an individual; and a plurality of magnet assemblies for releasable mounting on the head mount, wherein each of the magnet assemblies comprises a permanent magnet, and at least one of (i) a movement mechanism for moving the permanent magnet and/or (ii) a magnetic shield shutter mechanism, for selectively providing a rapidly changing magnetic field capable of inducing weak electric currents in the brain of an individual so as to modify the natural electrical activity of the brain of the individual; wherein the number of magnet assemblies mounted on the head mount, their individual positioning on the head mount, and their selective provision of a rapidly changing magnetic field is selected so as to allow the spatial, strength and temporal characteristics of the magnetic field to be custom tailored for each individual, whereby to provide individual-specific TMS therapy, to assist in diagnosis or to map out brain function in neuroscience research.

Deep brain stimulation system and method with multi-modal, multi-symptom neuromodulation

Described here is a deep brain stimulation (“DBS”) approach that targets several relevant nodes within brain circuitry, while monitoring multiple symptoms for efficacy. This approach to multi-symptom monitoring and stimulation therapy may be used as an extra stimulation setting in extant DBS devices, particularly those equipped for both stimulation and sensing. The therapeutic efficacy of DBS devices is extended by optimizing them for multiple symptoms (such as sleep disturbance in addition to movement disorders), thus increasing quality of life for patients.

Device and method for recording biopotentials in laboratory animals

A head stage designed for non-surgical placement of EEG electrodes in small animals is disclosed. The head stage is connected to thin barbed pin electrodes of multiple lengths, such that they can be placed into the brain at the chosen depth. A miniature device comprising a wireless transmitter or data logger can be attached using magnets or connectors to the stage. When the head stage is placed on the head of a small animal and pressure is applied on the stage, the set of pin electrodes penetrate the skull, such that the stage becomes firmly fixed to the skull. Further, the device includes electrodes on its body that eliminate the need of wires for EEG recordings. When the capsule including sharp electrodes is pressed toward the skull, the electrodes penetrate the bone and fixes the capsule onto the skull for recording biopotential signals from the brain.
