Shipping systems for temperature-sensitive materials and methods of making and using same. In one embodiment, the shipping system includes a cooler base and a lid. The base includes an inner portion and an outer portion. The inner portion includes a thermal insulation unit including a bottom wall and four side walls. A thermally-conductive member is positioned on the bottom wall. A polymeric bag encapsulates the thermally-conductive member and some of the thermal insulation unit. The outer portion includes thermally-insulating material and defines an opening. The inner portion is permanently bonded to the outer portion, with cavities defined therebetween. A product box is placed in the inner portion directly over the polymeric bag and the underlying thermally-conductive member. First temperature-control members are disposed within the inner portion, with at least one temperature-control member directly over the polymeric bag and the underlying thermally-conductive member. Second temperature-control members are disposed within the cavities.

A portable heating and cooling container for keeping retained liquids heated or cooled in the same compartment. An insulated vessel with a foam or vacuum insulating layer keeps the retained liquids at a consistent temperature for long periods of time. A heating component is attachable to an outside of an insulated vessel. The heating element is not used when the retained liquids are desired to be cool or cold. The heating component may penetrate either a double sidewall of the vessel housing or the vessel lid. A resistance heating element is retained within the insulated vessel to heat the retained liquid on demand as desired allowing for access to heated liquids remotely.

The PCM conforms to a contoured surface of the rigid container. In an alternative implementation, a temperature-sensitive package includes a pocket of PCM within a flexible liner. The flexible liner defines a preferred shape of the temperature-protective package. The flexible liner also defines an opening for receiving a product. The opening corresponds to the preferred shape. In one implementation, multiple flexible liners can be utilized to define the preferred shape and the opening.
