A wireless (e.g., near field or RF) communication device, and methods of manufacturing and using the same are disclosed. The wireless communication device includes a receiver and/or transmitter, a substrate with an antenna thereon, an integrated circuit, and one or more protection lines. The antenna receives and/or transmits or broadcasts a wireless signal. The integrated circuit processes the wireless signal and/or information therefrom, and/or generates the wireless signal and/or information therefor. The integrated circuit has a first set of terminals electrically connected to the antenna. The protection line(s) are on a common or different substrate as the antenna. The protection line(s) sense or determine a continuity state of a package or container on which the communication device is placed or to which the communication device is fixed or adhered, and are electrically connected to a second set of terminals of the integrated circuit different from the first set of terminals.

A security packaging provides a structure for providing evidence of package tampering. The packaging includes a first panel having an opening, and a foil label at least partially overlaying the opening and at least partially adhered to an insert member. Upon separation of the insert member from the packaging, at least a portion of the foil label is separated from the foil label thereby leaving a visual void in the opening indicating that the separation has occurred.

An adapter for single serving cartridges includes a coffee maker readable identification feature. The identification feature may be visual (for example any feature which may be read or a bar code), a readable magnetic strip, a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), or any feature able to contain information and provide that information to a reader. The adapter may be configured for known disposable single serving cartridges, and may include one or more needles to puncture the cartridges for use. The identification feature may inform the coffee maker that an adapter carrying a disposable single serving cartridge is in use, and adjust the coffee maker accordingly.

The present application provides a bottling facility for filling a refillable package. The bottling facility may include a filler for filling the refillable package, a radio frequency identification tag positioned on the refillable package, a radio frequency identification reader, and a data processing system in communication with the radio frequency identification reader. The radio frequency identification reader identifies the radio frequency identification tag when the refillable package is refilled and the data processing system tracks the number of times the refillable package is refilled.

The invention provides a beverage preparation machine comprising a brew head for receiving beverage cartridges of various heights and means for passing an aqueous medium through said beverage cartridges to form a beverage from one or more beverage ingredients contained in said cartridges. The brew head comprising a first part and a second part, the first and second parts being movable relative to one another from an open position in which said beverage cartridges can be received in the brew head and a closed position in which said beverage cartridge can be fixedly retained in a brew head space defined between the first and second parts. Wherein in use, beverage cartridges of various heights may be clamped in the brew head space between a distal end of a clamping member and the second part.

A packaging assembly includes first and second subassemblies and a panel. A product is suspended over the panel and is disposed within a container portion formed within the first subassembly. A stiffening channel is provided on the second subassembly. A blotter card is placed on top of the first subassembly.

A blister pack for dispensing medication comprises a substantially flat backing, blisters formed on the backing, breakable resistive traces, conductive traces, a power source for applying electrical power to the traces, and a controller. The blisters and the backing form cavities for containing the medication, and each blister is coupled with another blister to form pairs of blisters. Resistive traces are applied to the backing under each blister. For each pair of blisters, the resistive traces under a first blister of the pair of blisters is connected in parallel by the conductive traces with the resistive traces under a second blister of the pair of blisters. The controller detects breakage of the resistive traces under the blisters for each pair of blisters by measuring the voltage across the resistive traces under each pair of blisters, and communicate the status to a remote server for instant analysis and reporting to parties of interest.
