A refuse container having an indicator assembly for informing a waste generator of contamination in a waste stream. A refuse container includes a container body comprising a receptacle portion and a lid coupled with the receptacle portion. The receptacle portion includes a plurality of walls that together define an enclosed space for containing refuse. An indicator device is coupled with the container body. The indicator device is movable relative to the container body between a first position and a second position. First indicia is provided on one of the indicator device or the container body. When the indicator device is in the first position, the first indicia are visible from the exterior of the refuse container, and when the indicator device is in the second position, the first indicia are not visible from the exterior of the refuse container.

Devices, systems, and methods of garbage sorting and processing to encourage proper waste disposal are disclosed. An embodiments of the waste management and sorting system comprises a smart waste machine configured to receive waste from a user and place the waste in proper storage containers having first identifiers, a mobile application configured to run on a user device and communicatively coupled to the smart waste machine and/or the server device, and a conveyor system configured to sort and/or process waste once it is removed from the storage containers.

A method for sorting waste, in which waste or recyclable material intended for sorting is brought in waste bags to a sorting apparatus, which includes a conveyor, from which the waste bags belonging to different waste components are separated from each other by guiding them into the containers according to the waste components or to further processing. The waste storage device may include compartments for storing waste; an acquisition unit that acquires at least one characteristic of a piece of waste that is to be stored in the waste storage device; a processor unit that obtains data identifying the waste from the characteristic; a communications unit that sends the identifying data to a remote server and that receives data in response; and an advice supply unit that delivers sorting advice to a user. The sorting advice may come from the data that was received in response and it may identify at least one of the compartments of the waste storage device into which the piece of waste should be stored or placed by the user.

The disclosure describes waste receptacles for processing waste comprising a waste portal configured to accept waste deposited by an end user, a waste analysis unit positioned proximate to the waste portal, a waste conveyor connected to the waste portal, a paddle or robotic member positioned over the waste conveyor and configured to push the waste off the waste conveyor and into a grinder or into a waste commodity container.

A bin for receiving or storing one or more items. The bin includes a wall having an upper end and a lower end, and a bottom extending along the lower end of the wall. The wall and the bottom cooperate to define a chamber for receiving or storing one or more items. The bin also includes mouth at the upper end of the wall that is in communication with the chamber. The bin further includes a rim extending around a periphery of the mouth. The bin also includes content information on at least a portion of an exterior surface of the rim that is configured to identify the one or more items the bin is intended to receive or store.

A recycling receptacle provides a physical example of items to be recycled as part of a recycling receptacle. The recycling receptacle includes a container portion for storing material to be recycled in a chamber and a communication portion for communicating what material should be recycled. The communication portion includes an opening in fluid communication with the container portion chamber and a visible cell that contains examples of materials that should be recycled.

A collection station for post-consumer recyclable materials or other materials includes a housing, which may be fabricated from an intermodal freight container, and multiple collection receptacles positioned within the housing under openings in side walls of the housing for depositing materials in the collection receptacles. Each opening and collection receptacle may be designated for a different type of recyclable material, facilitating segregation of the different types of recyclable materials. In some embodiments, an electronic access control unit including a code reader allows a user to unlock access doors covering the openings using a smartphone or other code-carrying device. A rechargeable battery and solar power system may provide power for the access control unit. The collection receptacles may include bag support frames supporting collection bags, and each bag support frame may be retractable against a wall of the housing to enable service access to collection receptacles behind the bag support frame.
