The medium transporting device includes a gripping unit that grips a leading end region of a medium, a medium supporting unit that has a first adsorption supporting unit which adsorbs and supports a trailing end region of the medium and a second adsorption supporting unit which adsorbs a non-end region of the medium and generates an adsorption pressure less than an adsorption pressure generated by the first adsorption supporting unit, a medium position moving unit that moves a position in a medium width direction in the medium width direction, and a medium transporting unit that transports the medium. Regarding the width direction, the first adsorption supporting unit has a length, which is obtained by adding a length twice a moving distance of the medium to a medium length, and a distance from a center position in the width direction to one end in the width direction is the same as a distance from the center position in the width direction to the other end in the width direction.

Transporting a medium

A system to transport a medium comprises a medium carrier, a negative pressure device, a vacuum chamber and a flow control device. The medium carrier is to carry the medium on a first side. The negative pressure device is to generate a negative pressure that is below an ambient pressure. The vacuum chamber is disposed on a second side of the medium carrier opposite to the first side and fluidly coupled to the negative pressure device. The flow control device is to manipulate a fluid flow from the vacuum chamber towards the negative pressure device. The flow control device is operated in response to the medium carrier changing its operational state.

An apparatus for controlling curl in sheets between two transports includes a curved baffle placed between the two transports. A thin layer of high velocity air is applied to the curved baffle. The high velocity air layer, which will have a tendency to follow the curved baffle (Coanda effect), will divert sheets (Bernoulli effect) towards the curved baffle. By positioning the curved baffle between the two transports and by applying a uniform air stream to it, a lower pressure area will be created. This will flatten the trajectory of the sheets and ensure acquisition by the downstream transport.

A marker transport system and a method of operating the marker transport system. A group of print bars is located with respect to a marker transport platen and a marker transport belt. A vacuum source and a pneumatic solenoid block are associated with the marker transport platen. The marker transport platen includes airflow sections divided into process-direction slots and cross-section direction slots. The cross-section direction slots are located beneath the print bars and are connected to the vacuum source via the pneumatic solenoid block, which facilitates an individual control of each of the cross-process direction slots. Pneumatic valves are associated with the pneumatic solenoid block, which supplies a flow of vacuum to the cross-process direction vacuum slots. The pneumatic vales can be timed to allow the vacuum to be present when a sheet is present over a corresponding vacuum slot among the process-direction slots and the cross-section direction slots.

A conveying unit includes a rotatable roller having a first through-hole between the inside and the outside of the roller. A cylindrical member inside the roller has an opening and defines an annular chamber between the member and the roller. An insert borne by the roller inserted in the first through-hole thereof and contacting an external surface of the cylindrical member has a second through-hole in communication with the outside of the roller and extending through the first through-hole and the annular chamber. The first through-hole of the opening is configured such that, when the roller rotates, the insert transits at the opening, temporarily placing the outside of the roller in fluid communication with the annular chamber via the second through-hole, so that a sheet outside the roller and at the first through-hole is pulled against the roller by aspirating means and is conveyed.

SHEET REGISTRATION USING ROTATABLE FRAME

Alignment apparatuses include a frame and contact elements connected to the frame. The contact elements contact items that are to be transported in a processing direction relative to the frame. The contact elements are in permeant fixed positions relative to the frame, and do not move relative to the frame. Adjustable mounts are connected to the frame and move the frame in the processing direction and in a perpendicular cross-processing direction. A controller is electrically connected to the adjustable mounts, and the controller is adapted to control the adjustable mounts to simultaneously move the frame and all the contact elements in the cross-processing direction and the processing direction while rotating the frame.
