The detecting unit detects recording material placed in the processing tray. The stapling unit executes a stapling process for the recording material placed in the processing tray. The instructing unit outputs a stapling process execution instruction. Upon receipt of the execution instruction in a state in which the detecting unit has detected a recording material inserted in the processing tray from an outside of a main body of a main body apparatus, the control unit cause the stapling process to be executed. The switching unit switches a position of the stapling unit among a plurality of positions. The notifying unit provides notification of a placement position of the recording material in the processing tray corresponding to each of the plurality of positions.

According to an example, an apparatus to prevent media transport jams may include an actuator to load and advance a media within a media path width. The apparatus may also include a first sensor and a second sensor to detect respective edges of the media, in which the first sensor and the second sensor may be positioned outside of a media action area and on opposite sides of the media path width. The apparatus may further include a controller to prevent the actuator from advancing the media along the media path in response to a detection of one or both of the first edge of the media by the first sensor and the second edge of the media by the second sensor.

An image forming apparatus includes a cassette that has a placement plate on which a sheet is set, a paper feed roller, a raising/lowering mechanism that raises and lowers the placement plate, a print unit, a sheet sensor, an upper limit sensor and a control unit. The control unit recognizes, based on an output of the sheet sensor, that the sheet supplied from a paper feed device reaches an installation position of the sheet sensor. The control unit detects, based on an output of the upper limit sensor, that the paper feed roller reaches a predetermined upper limit position or that the raising/lowering mechanism raises the placement plate such that the sheet reaches a feed position and uses the sheet sensor and the upper limit sensor so as to detect that the paper feed device encounters overload.

According to an example, an apparatus to prevent media transport jams may include an actuator to load and advance a media within a media path width. Designation of the master terminal is changed to one or more different ones of the input terminals at different points in time. An operation unit displays a screen on a display screen to receive a moving instruction for moving the discharge tray, and confirmation of removal of the printing medium from the discharge tray. When the operation unit receives a moving instruction for moving the discharge tray from the extended position to the accommodated position, a control unit moves the discharge tray after receiving confirmation from a user, via the screen, that the printing medium has been removed from the discharge tray, and, when the external tray is attached to the printing apparatus, the control unit does not move the discharge tray from the accommodated position to the extended position.

According to an embodiment, when a printing medium that has undergone an image forming process is taken in, stapling processing is performed on the printing medium, and then the printing medium is discharged to the tray, the following process is performed. That is, when the process is performed in accordance with instructed stapling processing, and the printing medium that has undergone the process is discharged outside the apparatus, the amount of printing media stacked on the tray is controlled in accordance with instructed stapling processing.
