A web unwinding and splicing system includes a turret unwind having a turret arm with rotatable shafts at opposing ends thereof to unwind a running web of an expiring web material roll and unwind a waiting web of a new web material roll. A web splicing unit operable with the turret unwind includes a web deflection device that bumps the running web onto the waiting web to splice the running web with the waiting web and a cutting device that selectively severs the running web, thereby creating a leading portion of the running web that is spliced to the waiting web and a trailing portion of the running web that remains separate from the waiting web. A vacuum system is positioned proximate the running web to suction in the trailing portion of the running web left on the expiring web material roll.

Tension regulating directly driven roller festoon

A web handling system and method for controlling tension in a web of material is disclosed. For instance, the web handling system is particularly well suited for maintaining web tension within predefined setpoints during temporary interruptions in the process, such as during splicing operations. The web handling system includes an accumulator or festoon that accumulates amounts of the material as the material is being fed downstream. At least one guide roll within the festoon is coupled to a drive device, such as a motor. The system also includes at least one tension sensing device. The drive device accelerates or decelerates the guide roll based upon information obtained from the tension sensing device. In one embodiment, the system further includes an electronic gearing configuration between a roll of material being unwound and the guide roll within the festoon for better synchronization and further minimizing tension swings. The electronic gearing can include a diameter calculator for the roll of material being unwound based on speed feedback of a driven guide roll.

APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR WEB TWIST DEFECT CORRECTION

Apparatus and methods are provided to minimize waste and improve quality and production in web processing operations. The apparatus and methods provide defect detection in deposition of acquisition material, which on current machines frequently flips and is difficult to detect when it has flipped causing manufacturers to scrap thousands of products. Using the present invention, defects are able to be detected by discerning a difference in the appearance from side to side with a vision camera, and an acquisition inverter can flip the material to a correct orientation.

UNWINDER FOR WEB MATERIAL AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE UNWINDING OF WEB MATERIAL

An unwinder for web material includes: a first and second reel holder, a dynamic storage device, a junction device arranged between the first or second reel holder and the dynamic storage device and configured to join an end portion of web material running out on the first reel to an initial portion of web material of the second reel, an actuator configured to pull the web material. The dynamic storage device includes: a plurality of first return rollers, a carriage mounted on a guide and free to move along the guide approaching or moving away from the first return rollers, a plurality of second return rollers mounted idly on the carriage. The return rollers define a zigzag path for the web material. The dynamic storage device includes a plurality of motorized shafts and each first return roller is mounted by means of two rolling bearings on a respective motorized shaft.
