Disclosed herein is an apparatus for opening and closing containers with lids by hand, which comprises a large flexible padded body suitable for being comfortably gripped, squeezed, and twisted by weak hands, and a region for receiving and gripping a hard material, such as a lid of a container. The more preferred embodiments of the invention comprise one or more types of silicone, and an inner layer of a harder silicone may be used to improve the grip on a lid. The flexibility and stretchability of the apparatus allows it to stretch and adapt to different sizes and shapes of lids. Various embodiments also utilize different ergonomic shapes to accommodate different hand sizes and comfortably fit finger placement, including shapes that are squarish, cuboid, spheroid, star-shaped, cross-shaped, handle-shaped, resemble nuts, or have grooves or scallops for fingers to improve gripping.

The centering element has an abutment portion to abut against an upper container edge, and to prevent the container from moving, without exerting any force upon said edge.
