The present invention provides a strainer for use with a water pump in a mine that includes a grill for preventing the ingress of solid material over predetermined dimensions, and an air discharge structure positioned so as to produce a continuous flow of air to remove the material from at least part of the grill, so that flow is maintained through the strainer.

A filtration apparatus for installation in a catch basin vault is described. A perforate support plate includes a retractable basket that lies below an opening in the support plate and is positioned below a manhole. Water flowing into the system flows onto the support plate and into the basket, which traps debris. The basket is slidable from an in-use position where the basket is positioned to screen debris flowing into the vault, and a cleanout-position in which the interior of the vault is accessible so that the vault may be cleaned. When the vault needs to be cleaned, the manhole cover is removed to allow workers to have access to the interior of the vault. The workers may clean out the basket, and then slide it out of the way so that they have access to the vault interior.

A fluid filtration device is provided that can be used for separating solids from fluids. In some embodiments, the fluid filtration device comprises a hollow housing and a hollow filter assembly located within the housing. Fluid to be filtered is provided to the inside of a filter material in the filter assembly and passes outward toward the housing. In some embodiments one or more flow-directing features are located between the filter assembly and the housing, and may aid in the flow of fluid to a filtered outlet after passing through the filter. An apparatus for separating out and removing screenings from wastewater includes a screening device having a screen surface through which the wastewater flows during operation of the screening device and screenings carried along in the wastewater are at least intermittently retained. The apparatus includes a sensor and a controller. The sensor monitors the screenings in the area upstream from the screen surface and/or in the area of the screen surface. The controller outputs a message when the screenings have one or several properties which have been defined and have been recognized by the sensor. In addition, a method for operating the apparatus and a system including the apparatus are provided.
