The invention relates to a method for cleaning a filter element made of a porous material. The method comprises directing ultrasound to the filter element, and directing after a predefined time from starting of the ultrasound an impulse to a filtrate reservoir causing filtrate inside the filtrate reservoir to be forced inside the filter element in order to remove particles from the surface of the filter element. Pressure of the impulse is between 4 to 8 times higher than the forward pressure and also that the reverse flux, measured in volume per area time, caused by the impulse is at the minimum 2 to 8 times the feed flux. The invention also relates to a filtering device comprising a filter element made of a porous material.

Filter apparatus

A filter apparatus (10) has a plurality of filter elements (20) in a filter housing (12) having a filter inlet (50) for a fluid to be filtered and a filter outlet (52) for the filtered fluid. A pressure control device (42) has at least one control plate (58) located inside a connection chamber (14). The control plate laterally passes over individual upper element openings (54) of the filter element to be backwashed (20), in a predefinable sequence, covering the opening to an increasing degree and then exposing the opening again. A discharge opening (46) of the backwash device (44) is, at least in part, fluidically connected to a lower element opening (56) of the filter element (20) to be backwashed, as the pressure control device (42) moves towards the upper element opening (54).

Flow assisted anti-fouling geometries for compact heat exchangers

A header for a heat exchanger and method for cleaning a heat exchanger in a loop without disconnecting loop components is provided. The header is in flow communication with the heat exchanger for distributing fluid through a plurality of adjacent channels. The header is connected between a main heat exchanger inlet nozzle and a channel flow distributor. A filter element is disposed within the header between the nozzle and channel flow distributor. Under normal operation, the filter element removes particulates and fouling material from the main flow stream before it enters the heat exchanger channels. During the cleaning process, fluid is injected on or through the filter element to remove particulates and fouling material through at least one outlet port. The header arrangement allows the filter element to be ‘cleaned in place’ without draining the system and disconnecting the heat exchanger or other components from the flow loop.

A fluid filtration system includes a fluid storage vessel such as a bioreactor, a filter housing including a filter element disposed therein, a pump coupled between the fluid storage vessel and the filter housing, and a flow diverter disposed between the pump and the filter housing. The pump is configured to move fluid from the fluid storage vessel through the filter element, and the flow diverter is configured for selectively directing fluid received from the pump to the first or second end of the filter housing. In a first mode of operation, the flow diverter directs flow through the filter housing in a first direction, while in a second mode of operation, the flow diverter directs flow through the filter housing in a second direction opposite the first direction.
