Energy Efficient Process for Concentrating and Recovering Lithium from a Lithium Containing Brine
A system and process for concentrating a lithium stream is disclosed. The lithium stream is directed to a reverse osmosis unit which produces a concentrate containing lithium compounds. The RO concentrate is directed through two pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) modules connected in series. The two PRO modules further concentrate the RO concentrate and at the same time yield a diluted brine that is effective to drive an energy recovery device. The RO concentrate leaving the PRO modules is directed to an osmotically assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) module which also further concentrates the RO concentrate.

Method of preparation of conductive polymer/carbon nanotube composite nanofiltration membrane and the use thereof
A method for preparation of conductive polymer/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane and the use thereof. This conductive polymer/CNT composite NF membrane is obtained by polymerizing conductive polymer into a CNT membrane and then in-situ cross-linking with glutaraldehyde under acidic condition. The synthetic method for the conductive polymer/CNT composite NF membrane is simple and has no need of expensive equipment. The prepared membrane has controllable membrane structure and possesses superior electrical conductivity and electrochemical stability. The membrane can couple with electrochemistry for electrically assisted filtration. With the electrical assistance, the membrane can achieve improved ion rejection performance while retaining high permeability by enhancement of membrane surface charge density, which alleviates the permeability-selectivity trade-off. Furthermore, the electrically assisted NF membrane filtration can also enhance the removal for small molecular organic pollutants.

Hybrid membrane and method for separating oil and water
A hybrid membrane, particularly of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/graphene oxide (GO)/SiO.sub.2, separates oil and water even from emulsions. The membrane can be made by one-step electrospinning, adding GO and SiO.sub.2 nanofillers in PAN in various concentrations. The nanofillers may be uniformly embedded in the nanofibrous structure of the electrospun hybrid membrane, with GO mainly embedded inside the PAN nanofibers and may cause knots, and/or SiO.sub.2 nanoparticles embedded on the nanofiber surface and may form micro-nano fiber surface protrusions. Hierarchical structures formed can have enhanced hydrophilicity due to oxygen-containing groups on both SiO.sub.2 and GO, and have >99% oil rejection from oil-water emulsions. Separation flux and phase rejection of gravity separation may be enhanced by incorporation of nanofillers, which may also enhance membrane mechanical properties. Separated water flux may be enhanced from 2600 (pure PAN) to 3151 Lm.sup.−2h.sup.−1 for the hybrid.
