Self-cleaning and monitoring filtration system

A filter system of the type having a pressure vessel having an annular filter media therein with a filter wiper piston moved by an air or hydraulic piston actuator. An electrically operated drain valve purges wiped contaminants from the filter media. Pressure sensors provide a signal to a controller of vessel inlet and outlet pressure. Position detectors provide signals to the controller of the drain valve position and filter actuation position. The controller has a computer which computes from the sensor inputs parameters representative, in real time, of entry fluid condition, relative amount of filter contamination, relative amount of filter wear, and relative amount of contaminant removal, and provides signals of the representation to indicators providing visual display thereof.

An automated modular filtration system, particularly for low volume tangential flow filtration processes, comprises a plurality of filtration modules formed as separate assemblies and at least one control unit for jointly controlling filtration processes of individual filtration units. Each filtration module contains at least one individual filtration unit for executing a filtration process independent of the other filtration units, first input ports for receiving a first type of fluids, second input ports for receiving a second type of fluids, and exit ports for outputting unused system fluids. First type fluids are process fluids are specific to the filtration processes executed in individual filtration units. Second type fluids are system fluids not specific to filtration processes executed in the individual filtration units. The second input and exit ports establish inter-module connections so system fluids can be forwarded from one filtration module to an adjacent filtration module of the filtration system.

METHOD FOR CLEANING A FILTER MODULE, AND FILTER MODULE FOR CARRYING OUT SAID METHOD

A method is disclosed for cleaning a filter module by means of a filter module having the following steps: providing a filter module having a filter head with two filter head openings; channelling fluid into the filter head via a first filter head opening; and channelling a portion of the fluid out of the filter head via a second filter head opening. The method is characterized in that, after fluid has been channelled into the filter head (210) via a first filter head opening, the fluid is partially swirled in the filter head.
