The filtration system may use different filtration configurations such as, but not limited to, flat sheet, hollow fiber, spiral wound and tubular membranes. The filtration membrane materials may be polymeric, ceramic, and combinations. The functionalized membranes can be such as, but not limited to, membranes coated or blended or cross-linked with materials displaying strong microwave absorption; and combinations.

Membrane based in-line fouling monitor for performance tracking in reverse osmosis and Nano-filtration systems
A novel reverse osmosis or nanofiltration system (RO/NF) capable of detecting and responding to onset of fouling within the system utilizing uniquely configured membrane permeate flow path within the system which generates a time-sensitive data. Membrane performance data in real-time operating conditions is then utilized for rapid detection of membrane fouling, fouling rate, and cause of fouling, followed by controller-based system generated actions to stop, and recover from fouling or slow-down fouling, and, if required, to predict, plan, and schedule operator intervention steps to recover optimum system operating conditions. The end-result is a novel energy-efficient and fouling-managed advanced (machine learning) reverse osmosis system for brackish water desalination.
In-line quantification and characterization of membrane fouling
Methods of detecting, quantifying and/or characterizing the fouling of a device from a combination of pressure and spectroscopic data are provided. The device can be any device containing components susceptible to fouling. Components can include membranes, pipes, or reactors. Suitable devices include membrane devices, heat exchangers, and chemical or bio-reactors. Membrane devices can include, for example, microfiltration devices, ultrafiltration devices, nanofiltration devices, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, osmosis, reverse electrodialysis, electro-deionisation or membrane distillation devices. The methods can be applied to any type of membrane, including tubular, spiral, hollow fiber, flat sheet, and capillary membranes. The spectroscopic characterization can include measuring one or more of the absorption, fluorescence, or raman spectroscopic data of one or more foulants. The methods can allow for the early detection and/or characterization of fouling. The characterization can include determining the specific foulant(s) or type of foulant(s) present. The characterization of fouling can allow for the selection of an appropriate de-fouling method and timing.
