Extraction of benzene from benzene/cyclohexane mixture

The extraction of benzene from benzene/cyclohexane mixture described herein is a process that removes benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane mixture with high selectivity, resulting in an enriched cyclohexane content in the retentate. The process involves adding an aqueous solution of poloxamer 188 to the benzene/cyclohexane mixture and waiting for the mixture to partition into an organic layer above an aqueous layer. Benzene, being more polar than cyclohexane, is selectively drawn into the aqueous layer. Benzene is then removed from the aqueous layer by pervaporation through a composite PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)/polystyrene membrane. Cyclohexane is recovered from the retentate by drawing off the organic layer of the retentate by any known method. About 97% of benzene has been removed from a 50-50 wt % mixture by pervaporation in the static mode, and about 99% by pervaporation in the continuous mode.

Hydrogen purification using molecular dynamics

A membrane is described for purifying or separating hydrogen from a multi-component gas stream such as syngas. This membrane uses a molecular pre-treatment, a transition metal, fluorine containing polymer, carbon fibers and carbon matrix sintered on a supportive screen. The membrane may be a bilayer membrane comprised of a layer containing high surface area carbon and another layer containing lower surface area carbon.

DEHYDRATION OF A MIXTURE CONTAINING A DIOL WITH HIGH WATER CONTENT USING OPTIMIZED PERVAPORATION PROCESS

Systems and methods for dehydrating a mixture of organic liquid and water are disclosed. A mixture of the organic liquid and water is fed to a membrane. The mixture is then subjected to process conditions sufficient to cause pervaporation. A permeate comprising a higher weight percentage of water than the weight percentage of water in the mixture is recovered. A retentate comprising a higher weight percentage of organic liquid than the weight percentage of the organic liquid in the mixture is also recovered.

The layer having a two-dimensional structure and defining a plurality of pores and imparting to the membrane filter a permeance of at least 900 Lm.sup.−2h.sup.−1bar.sup.−1 and a rejection of at least 60% as to a solvent containing a filterable species.

CROSS-LINKED POLYIMIDE MEMBRANES AND CARBON MOLECULAR SIEVE HOLLOW FIBER MEMBRANES MADE THEREFROM

A cross-linked polyimide of the reaction product of a crosslinking agent and a polyimide. The cross-linking agent having at least two cross-linking moieties and the polyimide has a plurality of polyimide chains having an aryl constituent with a moiety comprised of a reactive substituent. The polyimide has crosslinks from the reaction of the reactive substituent of the aryl constituents of the polyimide chains and the cross-linking moieties of the cross-linking agent. The cross-linking may be induced by thermally treating a mixture of the polyimide and crosslinking agent above about 150° C. to a temperature where the polyimide begins to decompose under an inert atmosphere. The membrane can be used for separations involving gases such as hydrogen and light hydrocarbons.

Hollow fiber membrane for filtration of liquids

The present invention provides an intrinsically anti-microbial hollow fiber membrane for filtration of liquids. The membrane comprises a plurality of porous hollow bilayer membrane fibers wherein the liquid enters from outside of the fiber, passing through the porous membrane into the lumen of the fiber and coming out from the hollow ending of the fiber, wherein this configuration provides a liquid outside-in arrangement and retains the filtrate outside. It means that membrane of the invention has built in characteristics to act against microbes in order to provide the use with a safe liquid free from microbes. The outer side or outer wall of the hollow fibers may be configured to become hydrophobic whereas inner side or inner wall of the hollow fiber membrane may be configured to become hydrophilic to enhance the water permeability to a great extent. The hollow fiber membrane may be configured to give it an intrinsic anti-microbial capability. A device containing above said membrane has also been disclosed.
