Hybrid potable water generator

A hybrid system for freshwater production utilizing the latent heat of condensation of atmospheric air humidity as a source of thermal energy to evaporate freshwater in a brine or saline and delivered to the saline evaporating chamber by a heat pump. Distillates form on both sides of the heat transfer, and intensification of humidity condensation in the air leads to the intensification of saline evaporation contributing to the overall increased yield of freshwater. The process is optimized by integrated systems in which the waste heat of inside and outside sources and the heat sink effect of the saline feed amplify the COP and SEER indexes of the installation. The technological regimes in which the equipment is used are intensified and optimized, cutting the desalination costs to the ranges affordable to the general population residing in arid regions in need of such technology.

A membrane evaporative condenser (MEC) includes a repeating sequence of channels for evaporation and/or condensation are arranged, each sequence of channels includes a condensation channel for condensation of a vapor to a liquid, an evaporation channel, and zero to one hundred evaporation-condensation channels. The condensation channel has walls of a non-permeable material which exterior to the condensation channel share the wall with a liquid evaporative medium (LEM) conduit that contains a LEM. The LEM conduit includes a moisture transfer membrane (MTM), where the LEM can evaporate into an evaporation channel or an evaporation-condensation channel that can amplify the effect of the heat transfer for additional mass transfer.

METHOD FOR PRODUCING LACTIC ACID AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING POLYLACTIC ACID

Lactic acid is obtained by a method including (A) a step of continuous fermentation wherein a fermentation culture medium of a microorganism having an ability of lactic acid fermentation is filtered through a porous membrane having an average pore size of not less than 0.01 m and less than 1 m with a transmembrane pressure difference within the range of 0.1 to 20 kPa, and the permeate is collected, while retaining the non-permeated liquid in or returning the non-permeated liquid to the culture, and adding a fermentation feedstock to the culture; (B) a step of filtering the permeate obtained in Step (A) through a nanofiltration membrane; and (C) a step of distilling the permeate obtained in Step (B) under a pressure of not less than 1 Pa and not more than atmospheric pressure, at 25 C. to 200 C. to recover lactic acid.

AMBIENT WATER CONDENSER SYSTEM

An ambient water condenser system is disclosed having a condensation chamber which at least partially contains or surrounds a fluid reservoir which contains a volume or mass of an aqueous hygroscopic solution for condensing water from ambient air and a distillation process for extracting the water from the solution. The fluid reservoir has a heat source, a lower porous hydrophobic membrane, and an upper porous hydrophobic membrane. The heat source causes the hygroscopic solution near the top of reservoir to have a higher temperature which causes it to have a higher water vapor pressure, whereby the water vapor passing through the upper porous hydrophobic membrane and into the condensation chamber condenses into liquid water.
