Self-compensating bed scale system for removable components
A patient support apparatus includes detectors and a controller operable to automatically update a tare weight for use in determining a true patient weight. The detectors are configured to produce signals indicating a presence or absence of a corresponding removable component. The controller is configured to determine weights of each and every removable component on the patient support apparatus and store each weight in a memory. The controller is further configured to receive the signals produced by the detectors and detect any addition or removal of removable components of the patient support apparatus, update the tare weight, and determine a weight of a patient being supported on the patient support apparatus.
SYSTEM FOR ADJUSTING THE CONFIGURATION OF A PATIENT SUPPORT APPARATUS
A system for adjusting the configuration of a patient support apparatus includes a patient support apparatus having at least one actuator configured to adjust the configuration of the patient support apparatus and a control unit to control the at least one actuator. The control unit has a memory that is configured to store patient support apparatus configurations. The control unit is also configured to: receive a first input including patient risk information of a patient to be supported; determine an optimum patient support apparatus configuration from the patient support apparatus configurations based on the patient risk information; receive a second input from a user to accept the determined optimum patient support apparatus configuration; and if the determined optimum patient support apparatus configuration is accepted by a user, control the at least one actuator to adjust the patient support apparatus into the determined optimum patient support apparatus configuration.
Bed with retractable side extension
The bed with retractable side extension has a retractable shelf positioned below the mattress, the shelf being extendable from a side of the bed. The shelf has a face plate and a railing mounted on the face plate that moves outward with the shelf when the shelf is extended. A height-adjustable platform is mounted on the shelf. When the shelf is fully extended, the platform may be raised so that a top surface of the platform is level with the bed's mattress and an inner edge of the platform is adjacent the mattress. The platform is held in place by an adjustable support, which may releasably lock the platform in the raised position and can be unlocked to lower the platform back onto the shelf.

Patient Support Apparatus Having Bearing Arrangement For Deck Extension Assembly
A patient support apparatus comprises a support frame and a patient support deck carried by the support frame. The patient support deck has a foot section configured to articulate relative to the support frame. A deck extension assembly comprises an extension frame and a deck extension section configured to extend and retract relative to the support frame. One more bearings are arranged between the deck extension section and the support frame. The deck extension section is movably coupled to the extension frame so that the deck extension section is able to move relative to the extension frame and relative to the foot section when the deck extension section extends and retracts relative to the support frame such that the deck extension section maintains contact with the bearing when extending and retracting relative to the support frame.
Rotary actuator having clutch assembly for use with patient support apparatus
An actuator for use in effecting movement of a movable member with respect to a first member of a patient support apparatus. A motor is provided for generating rotational torque. A carrier is adapted to be secured to the first member. An input member is coupled to the motor for concurrent rotation. An output member is adapted to be coupled to the movable member. A reduction geartrain is supported between the input member and the output member. A clutch assembly is disposed in torque-translating relationship between the reduction geartrain and the output member and moves between: an engaged configuration wherein torque from the motor is translated across the reduction geartrain to move the movable member with respect to the first member, and a disengaged configuration wherein torque is at least partially interrupted across the reduction geartrain to allow movement of the movable member independent of rotation of the motor.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR UPGRADING A BED TO INCLUDE MOVEABLE COMPONENTS
A mattress support includes a first section and a second section configured to be coupled to the first section. Each of the first section and the second section includes a base plate configured to be positioned on a box frame of a bed. A top plate is pivotable relative to the base plate. A bladder structure is positioned between the base plate and the top plate and inflatable to adjust a height of the top plate.
