Devices for and methods of forming segregated layers from mixtures of granular materials
Layering of initially mixed granular dissimilar material components deposited by surface flow is realized by varying the relative angle of the flowing layer periodically with respect to the bulk of the pile formed. Layer thickness and extent can be controlled by varying the timing and extent of the surface variations. Variation in surface flow rates may be realized by varying the feed rate from an inlet to a collection base at a fixed feed location, varying the feed location relative to the collection base, tilting the collection base that is supporting the material, and reducing the pile repose angle using vibration or fluid flow through the base.

Method and apparatus for multiple sample preparation and simultaneous loss on ignition/gain on ignition analysis, for use in X-ray fluorescence spectrometry
The analyzer mixes the material to be analyzed and the flux in sample holders supported by a moveable platform within the furnace. A tilt member is provided having multiple stations. Each station has an upstanding pin offset from the center point of the station in a different direction. The platform is indexed relative to the tilt member such that the sample holder aligns with each station, in sequence. As the sample holder aligns with each station, the platform is moved toward the tilt member such that the pin of the aligned station abuts and tilts the sample holder in a different direction. The repeated tilting of the sample holder in different directions mixes the material and flux. The contents of the sample holder may also be agitated by rapidly moving the platform back and forth with sudden stops. The analyzer can be used with a special sample holder.

A control unit is configured to move the tiltable platform in a specified pattern as part of a process. The tiltable platform can include a structure at least partially defining multiple mounting locations located thereon. Each mounting location can define a position for placing a cartridge in a predetermined orientation with respect to movement of the tiltable platform. The structure can be configured for selective placement in any one of multiple positions, which can form mounting locations having differing sizes and/or differing orientations with respect to the base. The tiltable platform can include more than one tier of mounting locations, and each tier of mounting locations can have any of various orientations with respect to the adjacent tiers of mounting locations.
