A method for producing water-absorbent resin particles comprising, in the following order: step 1 of polymerizing a water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer to obtain hydrous gel particles; step 2 of adding a chelating agent, a sulfite-based compound, and an organic antioxidant to the hydrous gel particles; and step 3 of subjecting the hydrous gel particles to a surface-crosslinking treatment, wherein in step 2, a water content in the hydrous gel particles when adding the sulfite-based compound is 20% by mass or more and 75% by mass or less.
