REAGENT CASSETTE

A cassette for arranging and loading reagent containers into a staining apparatus includes a housing with a base and walls upstanding from the base to define a plurality of compartments. Each compartment is configured for receiving a reagent container. The housing includes two portions, pivotably coupled together at respective first ends thereof, and configured to pivot between an open configuration and a closed configuration. Each portion of the housing in the closed configuration is received within a corresponding one of an adjacent pair of channels located within the staining apparatus when the cassette is loaded therewithin.

Functionally versatile cassettes

A fluid ejection device may include a blank cassette that includes a substrate, a die coupled to the substrate, a number of assigned electrical traces formed on the substrate, and a number of unassigned electrical traces formed on the substrate. At least one wirebond may couple at least one of the unassigned electrical traces to the die thereby assigning at least one function to the fluid ejection device.

Calibration process and system

An improved calibration process for a medical testing machine. The machine automatically recognizes that a package of calibration material has been inserted into it, and performs a calibration sequence to ascertain a calibration parameter to be used in performing future tests with the medical testing machine. The calibration package may include machine-readable indicators that the package is to be used for calibration, and of a calibration setpoint of a calibration material in the package. A calibration material may be stored in a lyophilized state in the package, and the medical testing machine may automatically reconstitute the lyophilized material.

Methods and containers are provided for identifying a species, illustratively a bacterial species. Illustrative methods comprise amplifying various genes in the nucleic acid from the bacterial species in a single reaction mixture using pairs of outer first-stage primers designed to hybridize to generally conserved regions of the respective genes to generate a plurality of first-stage amplicons, dividing the reaction mixture into a plurality of second-stage reactions, each using a unique pair of second-stage primers, each pair of second-stage primers specific for a target bacterial species or subset of bacterial species, detecting which of the second-stage reactions amplified, and identifying the bacterial species based on second-stage amplification. Methods for determining antibiotic resistance are also provided, such methods also using first-stage primers for amplifying genes known to affect antibiotic resistance a plurality of the second-stage reactions wherein each pair of second-stage primers specific for a specific gene for conferring antibiotic resistance.

The present invention is directed to sample test cards having an increased sample well capacity for analyzing biological or other test samples. In one embodiment, the sample test cards of the present invention comprise one or more fluid over-flow reservoirs, wherein the over-flow reservoirs are operatively connected to a distribution channel by a fluid over-flow channel. In another embodiment, the sample test cards may comprise a plurality of flow reservoirs operable to trap air thereby reducing and/or preventing well-to-well contamination. The test card of this invention may comprise from 80 to 140 individual sample wells, for example, in a test card sample test cards of the present invention have a generally rectangular shape sample test card having dimensions of from about 90 to about 95 mm in width, from about 55 to about 60 mm in height and from about 4 to about 5 mm in thickness.

A cartridge reader controlled by processing means for carrying out a diagnostic test on a sample contained in a fluidic cartridge comprises a mechanical valve for isolating the sample with the cartridge. A system for actuating the mechanical valve comprises an actuation member configured to move the mechanical valve from an open position to a closed position and an armature connected to the actuation member. The armature is configured to engage an electromagnet, wherein the electromagnet can be switched between an active state in which it electromagnetically holds the armature and an inactive state in which it does not electromagnetically hold the armature. First biasing means arc disposed between the actuation member and a bearing surface, wherein the first biasing means is configured to bias the actuation member into a first position in which it actuates a mechanical valve in a fluidic cartridge inserted into the reader.

A unitary, molded fluid reservoir body to which a fluid ejection head substrate is attached. The unitary, molded fluid reservoir body includes one or more discrete fluid chambers therein.
