SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR THE FUNCTIONALIZATION OF POLYOLEFIN FIBERS

A system for the functionalization of polyolefin fiber includes a reactor chamber, a fiber pulley system, and a precursor sprinkler system. The reactor chamber defines an interior reactor space and a plurality of fiber inlet/outlet pairs positioned at opposite ends of respective fiber processing axes. The fiber pulley system is arranged to direct polyolefin fiber through the plurality of fiber inlet/outlet pairs, along a fiber processing path comprising the respective fiber processing axes. The precursor sprinkler system is operable to aerosolize a precursor solution and contact the aerosolized precursor solution with the polyolefin fiber. A method for functionalizing polyolefin fiber includes aerosolizing the precursor solution to form an aerosolized precursor solution, passing polyolefin fiber along the fiber pulley system into the reactor chamber, contacting the polyolefin fiber with the aerosolized precursor solution, and passing functionalized polyolefin fiber out of the interior reactor space of the reactor chamber.

The present invention further provides for a nozzle, preferably of injection molded plastic material, and with an inlet designed to attach to common commercially available cartridges with male Luer threads located exterior of the nozzle. In addition, the present invention provides for a nozzle molded into a V-shape configuring the inside of a pre-creased garment or a piece of fabric when the garment is placed on the form for application of the resin. The nozzle has a locator flange that is included to ensure that there is correct alignment between the nozzle and guide skee. The nozzle is specifically angled when attached to the cartridge and the guide skee so that an optimum angle is achieved for the correct application of the resin. The molded plastic nozzle of the present invention has a smooth outer surface and strengthening ribs. The inside of the nozzle has a Ventura shape to accelerate the resin when it is being applied and the slit can be molded into different widths to correspond to the amount of resin required for different weight fabrics.

Provided are a method and an apparatus for producing a functional film with a coating solution including a material whose performance is deteriorated by oxygen, without performance deterioration. The method for producing a functional film includes a coating step of supplying a coating solution having a dissolved oxygen concentration of 1000 ppm or less to a die coater having a backup roller and applying the coating solution to a flexible support transported in a state where the support is wound around the backup roller by the die coater, in which a reduced pressure chamber which covers a surface of the flexible support is provided on an upstream side of the die coater in a transport direction of the flexible support, and an inert gas is supplied to the reduced pressure chamber and an exhaust amount from the reduced pressure chamber is larger than a supply amount of the inert gas.

System for producing a fully impregnated thermoplastic prepreg

According to one embodiment, a system for manufacturing a fully impregnated thermoplastic prepreg includes a mechanism for moving a fabric or mat and a drying mechanism that removes residual moisture from at least one surface of the fabric or mat. The system also includes a resin application mechanism that applies a reactive resin to the fabric or mat and a press mechanism that presses the coated fabric or mat to ensure that the resin fully saturates the fabric or mat. The system further includes a curing oven through which the coated fabric or mat is moved to polymerize the resin and thereby form a thermoplastic polymer so that upon exiting the oven, the fabric or mat is fully impregnated with the thermoplastic polymer. During at least a portion of the process, humidity in the vicinity of the coated fabric or mat is maintained at substantially zero.
