COATING COMPOSITIONS AND FORMULATION METHODS
A method of preparing a multi-layer coated article is disclosed. The method utilizes a high transfer efficiency applicator comprising a plurality of nozzles configured to apply a stream or droplets of a coating composition. The method includes providing a substrate bearing a partially-dehydrated aqueous coating layer, preparing a compatible coating composition, and applying the compatible coating composition to the substrate. The compatible coating composition is prepared by providing a test layer of the partially-dehydrated aqueous coating layer, applying a plurality of candidate cosolvents to the test layer, identifying at least one compatible cosolvent, and formulating the compatible coating composition as a waterborne fluid suitable for overspray-free application.
TEXTURED COATING FOR OPTICAL PRODUCTS
A coating composition includes a first polymer and a second polymer that are incompatible and non-reactive with one another. The absolute value of the difference between the refractive index of the first polymer and the refractive index of the second polymer is about 0 to about 0.01. The first polymer and the second polymer are soluble in a carrier liquid that is a good solvent for the first polymer and a poor solvent for the second polymer. The carrier liquid is removed from the coating layer to spinodally decompose the mixture of the first polymer and the second polymer in an amount sufficient to form a substantially continuous first phase with a predominant amount of the first polymer and a substantially discontinuous second phase with a predominant amount the second polymer. At least 70% of the second phase includes droplets with an aspect ratio, when viewed in the plane of the surface of the substrate, of less than about 3.
HIGH-GLOSS SURFACE BY MEANS OF HOT-COATING
The present invention relates to a process for producing high-gloss surfaces on at least one portion of a substrate area, where the steps comprise (a) applying a layer made of a melt to at least one portion of the substrate area; (b) polishing of the applied layer of melt; (c) applying at least one lacquer layer to the polished layer of melt by means of a curtain-coating process; and (d) hardening the layer structure applied. The invention further relates to articles obtainable by this type of process.
Surface appearance simulation systems and methods
A structural member includes a simulated surface appearance. The structural member includes a substrate, plural intermediate layers, and a top coat. The plural intermediate layers are applied over at least one surface of the substrate, with at least some of the plural intermediate layers configured to cooperate with each other to provide a simulated appearance for the structural member. The top coat is applied outward of the plural intermediate layers. The top coat is relatively thin and is configured for use with exterior applications. The top coat includes a base configured for UV resistance and an additive configured to provide abrasion resistance.
GAS BARRIER MULTILAYER FILM AND METHOD FOR PRODUCING THE SAME
A gas barrier multilayer film includes a film substrate, a layer formed on at least one surface of the film substrate and made of an inorganic compound, and a gas barrier layer formed on the layer made of the inorganic compound and formed of a mixture, which contains an acrylic acid polymer made of poly(meth)acrylic acid or a partially neutralized product thereof wherein a degree of neutralization of the poly(meth)acrylic acid with zinc is not larger than about 25 mol %, a sugar or starch, and a hypophosphite wherein the hypophosphite is present at about 1 mass % to about 15 mass % of a total solid content of the mixture.
Coated non-woven fabrics from inorganic fibers and functional, decorative layers for floor coverings, ceiling coverings and wall coverings manufactured therefrom
The present invention relates to a non-woven fabric made of inorganic fibers, which has a coating of at least two layers on one of both surfaces, wherein
(i) the non-woven fabric made of inorganic fibers has a thickness of at least 0.2 mm,
(ii) the first layer of the coating comprises particles, whose particle size is between 50 and 100 m,
(iii) the second layer of the coating, which is applied onto the first layer, comprises particles, wherein more than 90% of the particles have a particle size of less than 20 m.
The non-woven fabric made of inorganic fibers according to the invention, in particular glass non-woven fabrics, are in particular suitable for producing decorative coatings for floor coverings, ceiling coverings and wall coverings.
ACTIVE ENERGY RAY-CURABLE RESIN COMPOSITION AND AUTOMOBILE HEADLAMP LENS
Provided is an active energy ray-curable resin composition with which it is possible to form a cured film, having outstanding scratch resistance, hardness, and weather resistance, on the surface of a molded resin article for an automobile headlamp lens. The active energy ray-curable resin composition is used to form a cured film on the surface of a molded resin article for an automobile headlamp lens and comprises (A) 10-70% by mass of a mono- or poly-pentaerythritol poly(meth)acrylate compound having a specific structure, (B) 10-50% by mass of a urethane(meth)acrylate compound having at least two (meth)acryloyloxy groups, at least one amido group, and at least two urethane bonds, and (C) 20-80% by mass of a poly[(meth)acryloyloxyalkyl]isocyanurate compound having a specific structure.
Biodegradable film
The present application concerns a coated film comprising a substantially biodegradable substrate having a biodegradable coating thereon at a coat weight of not more than 12 gsm, as well as useful articles sealed inside a package at least partly comprising such a film, and also a process for producing a coated film comprising providing a substantially biodegradable film substrate and applying a biodegradable coating to the substrate at a coat weight of less than 12 gsm by means of a hot melt coating step.
System and method for making a film having a matte finish
A system and a method for providing a film having a matte finish is described. A coatable material is applied to a substrate. The viscosity of the coatable material is changed and a face-side roller having patterned features thereon contacts the coatable material to impart a matte finish thereon; and hardening the coatable material.
