The first end portion has a surface on which a first dye is disposed. The second end portion has a surface which is free of the first dye or on which the first dye is disposed with a smaller amount than the first dye disposed on the surface of the first end portion. The intermediate portion includes a gradation portion having a surface on which the first dye decreases in amount from the first end portion toward the second end portion. The gradation portion has a length greater than or equal to 20 mm in a dye gradation direction extending from the first end portion toward the second end portion.

According to examples, an article may include a base layer that extends along a first dimension and a second dimension, in which the second dimension is orthogonal to the first dimension. The article may also include reflective ribbons provided on an upper surface of the base layer, in which the reflective ribbons positioned along a common plane extending in the second dimension have dihedral angles that change as a function of distance across the common plane.
ORIENTING MAGNETICALLY-ORIENTABLE FLAKES
According to examples, a substrate may be moved through a magnetic field, in which the substrate includes a fluid carrier containing magnetically-orientable flakes. The magnetic field may influence the magnetically-orientable flakes to be respectively oriented in one of multiple orientations. In addition, during movement of the substrate through the magnetic field, radiation may be applied onto a plurality of selected portions of the fluid carrier through at least one opening in a mask to cure the fluid carrier at the plurality of selected portions and fix the magnetically-orientable flakes in the plurality of selected portions at the respective angular orientations as influenced by the magnetic field.
BLACKENED OPTICAL COMPONENT WITHOUT FLUORESCENCE
An optical component may be optically blackened so that the surface of the component is not reflective when light impinges upon the surface. In some examples, a method of blackening involves exposing a surface of the optical component that defines an optical pathway to an optical blackening composition for a period of time effective to optically blacken the surface. The optical blackening composition may be configured so that the resulting optically blackened optical pathway is non-fluorescing when exposed to ultraviolet light. In some examples, the optical blackening composition comprises selenous acid and is devoid of organic molecules.
METHOD AND JIG FOR FORMING PATTERN USING MAGNETIC INK AND MAGNETIC FORCE
The present invention relates to a method and a jig for forming a pattern, the method and the jig being capable of realizing various and unique pattern designs due to magnetic particles included in the magnetic ink being distributed in various densities according to intensity of the magnetic force. Disclosed is a method and a jig for forming a pattern by using magnetic ink and magnetic force, the method including: preparing a jig which generating magnetic force, applying magnetic ink on a surface of a substrate to form a print layer, disposing the substrate configured with the print layer above the jig, forming a magnetic pattern on the print layer by applying magnetic force generated from the jig, and drying the print layer.
APPARATUSES AND PROCESSES FOR PRODUCING OPTICAL EFFECT LAYERS COMPRISING ORIENTED NON-SPHERICAL MAGNETIC OR MAGNETIZABLE PIGMENT PARTICLES
The present invention relates to the field of magnetic assemblies and processes for producing optical effect layers (OEL) comprising magnetically oriented non-spherical magnetic or magnetizable pigment particles on a substrate. In particular, the present invention relates to magnetic assemblies and processes for producing said OELs as anti-counterfeit means on security documents or security articles or for decorative purposes.
Methods for making compositions of materials for forming coatings and layered structures including elements for scattering and passing selectively tunable wavelengths of electromagnetic energy
Methods are provided for forming a particular multi-layer micron-sized particle that is substantially transparent, yet that exhibits selectable coloration based on its physical properties. The disclosed physical properties of the particle are controllably selectable refractive indices to provide an opaque-appearing energy transmissive material when pluralities of the particles are suspended in a substantially transparent matrix material. Multiply-layered (up to 30+ constituent layers) particles result in an overall particle diameter of less than 5 microns. The material suspensions render the particles deliverable as aspirated or aerosol compositions onto substrates to form layers that selectively scatter specific wavelengths of electromagnetic energy while allowing remaining wavelengths of the incident energy to pass. The disclosed particles and material compositions uniquely implement optical light scattering techniques in energy (or light) transmissive layers that appear selectively opaque, while allowing 80+% of the energy impinging on the light incident side to pass through the layers.
Methods and systems for applying aerodynamically functional coatings to a surface
An aero-contoured coating system is provided. The system has an aerodynamically functional coating having at least one or more color layers, one or more first clearcoat layers over the color layer(s) to obtain a pre-aero-contoured coating, the one or more first clearcoat layers configured for abrasion and aero-contouring to obtain an aero-contoured surface, and one or more additional clearcoat layers over the aero-contoured surface. The system further has a structure having a prepared and primed substrate surface with a primer layer. The system further has an aero-contouring device to abrade a plurality of flow surfaces on a pre-aero-contoured coated surface and to mechanically aero-contour a plurality of coating edges to reduce one or more coating edge peaks and coating edge angles of abutting coating edges between the one or more color layers. The system further has one or more masking elements for masking the one or more color layers.
MULTILAYER COATING FILM AND COATED ARTICLE
FF properties of a multilayer coating film configured to exhibit a warm color through a lustrous layer (14) and a translucent colored layer (15) are improved to achieve a metallic textured color having a high-quality color tone. The lustrous layer (14) contains, in a mixed state, a high-reflection flake (21) having a visible light reflectance of 90% or more and a low-reflection flake (22) having a visible light reflectance that is half (i.e., ) or smaller than the visible light reflectance of the high-reflection flake (21) as the luster material. When both of the high-reflection flake (21) and the low-reflection flake (22) are projected on a bottom of the lustrous layer (14), a ratio of a projected area of the flakes (21) and (22) on the bottom of the lustrous layer (14) is 100%.
