ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCER FOR MEASURING WELLBORE CHARACTERISTICS
An ultrasonic transducer positionable in a wellbore environment may include a piezoelectric material layer, a protective layer, and connecting plate positioned between the piezoelectric material layer and the protective layer. The piezoelectric material layer may be formed as a plurality of columns of piezoelectric material for detecting a characteristic of the wellbore environment during a drilling operation. The protective layer may be positionable between the piezoelectric material layer and an acoustic medium in the wellbore environment. The connecting plate may be positioned between the piezoelectric material layer and the protective layer. The connecting plate may have a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) in a range between the CTE of the piezoelectric material layer and that of the protective layer, and an acoustic impedance in a range between the acoustic impedance of the piezoelectric material layer and that of the protective layer.
Ultrasonic transducers with piezoelectric material embedded in backing
A system and downhole tool comprising an ultrasonic transducer with a piezoelectric material embedded in a backing and a method of determining a parameter using the ultrasonic transducer. A self-noise of the transducer can be reduced by the piezoelectric material being at least partially embedded in the backing. The ultrasonic transducer can include an encapsulating material that encapsulates the backing.
VIBRATORY COMPACTOR

The frame may include a plurality of mounting brackets coupled between a first side member and a second side member of the frame. The vibratory compactor may include a vibration generation device coupled to the compactor plate within the inner space of the frame. The vibratory compactor may include a plurality of isolators, each isolator coupled to one mounting bracket of the plurality of mounting brackets. The housing may be coupled to the plurality of isolators, wherein the housing may include couplers removably coupled to a top surface of the housing. The couplers may be configured for coupling the vibratory compactor to an excavator type vehicle.
ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCER WITH REDUCED BACKING REFLECTION
A well tool can be used in a wellbore that can measure characteristics of an object in the wellbore. The well tool includes an ultrasonic transducer for generating an ultrasonic wave in a medium of the wellbore. The ultrasonic transducer includes a front layer, a rear layer, backing material coupled to the rear layer, and piezoelectric material coupled to the front layer and to the backing material. The rear layer can improve signal-to-noise ratio of the transducer in applications such as imaging and caliper applications.
METHODS AND APPARATUS FOR COILED TUBING INSPECTION BY ULTRASOUND
A device and method used for inspecting and measuring coiled tubing, production tubing or drill pipe as it enters the well. Defects such as internal and external wall loss, cracking and deformation can be detected and quantified. The axial motion of the tubing can be measured allowing for depth measurements that are more accurate and reliable than what can be obtained using an encoder wheel system.
VIBRATORY COMPACTOR
A vibratory compactor is provided. The vibratory compactor may include a frame coupled to a compactor plate. The frame and compactor plate are configured to vibrate to compact soil. The vibratory compactor may also include a housing having an inner volume, the housing coupled to the frame by at least one isolator with the frame and the at least one load bearing member located within the inner volume. The housing may be coupled to an arm of an excavator. A gap may be formed between the housing and the frame, wherein the gap between the housing and the frame inhibits movement of the housing with respect to the frame through the housing contacting the frame when excess forces are applied to the housing in an up/down direction, a forward/backward direction, a side-to-side direction, or combinations thereof.
METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PRE-LOADING A PIEZOELECTRIC TRANSDUCER FOR DOWNHOLE ACOUSTIC COMMUNICATION
A downhole acoustic transmitter has a piezoelectric transducer, an enclosure in which the piezoelectric transducer is housed, a transducer preload means which applies a selected compressive force against the transducer such that a mechanical preload is applied to the transducer, and an acoustic tuning element which has a first end coupled to the transducer preload means or the transducer, and an open second end. The acoustic tuning element is not coupled to anything but the transducer preload means or transducer, so the transducer preload means effectively has a second open end and thus can maintain the same preload compressive force on the transducer even when the transmitter is subjected to tension and compressive forces during operation.
SINGLE-MASS, ONE-DIMENSIONAL RESONANT DRIVER
An efficiency-enhanced resonant system is provided with a backing mass connected to a linear vibrator, a parasitic mass connected to the linear vibrator, a positioning spring, a connecting device, and external biasing springs. The linear vibrator provides vibrating force to the parasitic mass which is connected to the connecting device, grasping a working implement. The use of separate positioning spring and external biasing springs accommodates a tuned system that balances the reduction in backing mass movement, avoids backing mass resonance within the working range of frequencies, and maintains a minimized linear vibrator stroke within the optimal range for one-dimensional implements within desired frequency ranges. The linear vibrator provides vibration that manifests as a frequency range of the natural frequency of the combined assembly of the parasitic mass, positioning spring, external biasing springs, connecting device, and implement, so that the resonant system efficiently performs work with minimized wasted energy.
