An apparatus for sorting parcels is described comprising a transport surface configured to convey parcels between a first end and a second end thereof. An opening defined in the transport surface is dimensioned to receive one or more of the parcels therethrough. The transport surface comprises a plurality of surface segments having a selected geometry and surface characteristics for controlling speeds of the parcels as they are conveyed. The apparatus further comprises a routing manifold having a chute having an inlet registered with the opening, a plurality of outlets coupled to the inlet, and a first diverter system comprising one or more diverters disposed in the routing manifold and operable to selectively direct the received parcels toward any outlet of the plurality of outlets. The one or more diverters may be responsive to destination information associated with the individual parcels.

METHOD FOR ANALYZING MALFUNCTIONS IN AN OPERATION OF A HANDLING SYSTEM, METHOD FOR TRAINING OR RETRAINING A CLASSIFIER, COMPUTER PROGRAM AND SYSTEM FOR ANALYZING MALFUNCTIONS

A method for analyzing malfunctions in an operation of a handling system configured to handle mail items includes identifying at least one characteristic of a mail item to be fed to the handling system to obtain mail item information, detecting a malfunction in an operation of the handling system to obtain malfunction information, determining at least one malfunction mail item or group of malfunction mail items that triggered the malfunction, and assigning the malfunction information with the mail item information of the malfunction mail item or malfunction mail item group.

Multi-tiered parcel sortation system

A multi-tiered automated parcel sortation system is utilized to sort parcels according to a common destination. A first tier includes an automated sorter configured to transport parcels from a source location to a release destination. A second tier includes accumulation containers each associated with a shipping destination, and the release destination within the first tier is a positioned directly above the accumulation container associated with the shipping destination of the parcel. Once transported to the release destination, a parcel is released into the accumulation container, and once the accumulation container is filled, the accumulation of parcels within the container is released into a third tier, which may include conveyors or autonomous guided vehicles with transport containers. In the third tier, the parcels are transported away for further processing.

Dynamic Tray Spacing

A controller of a material handling system performs a method of dynamic spacing on a sortation conveyor by predicting fullness of divert destinations. Required tray spacing between inducted articles destined for the same divert destination can be reduced when the divert destination is calculated to have sufficient capacity. Fewer discharge commands need to be ignored due to insufficient tray spacing. The material handling systems can achieve higher throughput by having fewer articles that cannot be discharged to an assigned destination.

Embodiments of a system and method for sorting and delivering articles in a processing facility based on image data are described. Image processing results such as rotation notation information may be included in or with an image to facilitate downstream processing such as when the routing information cannot be extracted from the image using an unattended system and the image is passed to an attended image processing system. The rotation notation information may be used to dynamically adjust the image before presenting the image via the attended image processing system.
