METHOD AND INSTALLATION FOR MANUFACTURING AND INSPECTING METAL CONTAINERS

Method and installation for manufacturing and inspecting metal containers. The method includes extruding a metal disk to form a metal container having a cylindrical body with a side wall, a base, and an open end opposite the base. After the metal container is formed the thickness of the base is determined by arranging the base between an X-ray emitter and an X-ray receiver and emitting X-rays from the X-ray emitter to the X-ray receiver through the base. The thickness of the base is determined based on the intensity of the X-rays absorbed by the base.

The disclosure relates to a drawn/ironed can having at least an inner surface coating film on a can inner surface side, the inner surface coating film containing a polyester resin and a curing agent, and a stress relaxation ratio of the inner surface coating film after 10 minutes at 1% elongation in a can bottom portion is 50% or higher under a test condition of 100° C., whereby metal exposure due to severe processing such as drawing or ironing and coating film peeling due to heat treatment after molding are effectively prevented.

Can manufacture

A method for manufacture of a metal can body is described in which two or more stretching operations are used so as to reduce the thickness of the central part of a cup base, prior to drawing the cup sidewall and forming a can body. By using two or more stretching operations, it has been found possible to control the thickness of the base without significantly reducing pressure performance of the finished can. Alternative embodiments of apparatus comprising tooling for carrying out this method are also described.

Can manufacture

A damper housing disposed on a center axis includes an extended mains section and a narrowed end section. The narrowed end section has a second predetermined wall thickness less than the first predetermined wall thickness of the extended main section. An intermediate conical section, connecting the narrowed end section and the extended main section, has an intermediate conical section wall thickness equal to the second predetermined wall thickness at an internal inclination angle relative to the center axis. A method for manufacturing the damper housing using a preformed tube, a first broaching die, a calibrating mandrel, and a swaging die is performed by compressing the preformed tube between the first broaching die and the narrowed head of the calibrating mandrel and compressing the preformed tube between the swaging die and the intermediary section of the calibrating mandrel to form the narrowed end section and the intermediate conical section, respectively.

An assembly includes an elongated ram body and a punch mounting assembly. The ram body has a reduced length. The punch mounting assembly includes an elongated body having a complementary length. The punch mounting assembly is coupled to the ram body. The assembled punch mounting assembly and ram body have an operational length.

CAN BODYMAKER MONITORING

A can bodymaker for producing can bodies from cups. The can bodymaker comprises a ram configured to reciprocate along an axis, a punch mounted on the ram; a tool pack comprising a cradle and a plurality of tools located in the cradle for drawing and ironing a cup mounted on the punch during a forward stroke of the ram. The can bodymaker further comprises a bolster plate fixed to the can bodymaker, an adapter plate fixed to the bolster plate and a stripper assembly fixed to the adapter plate for removing a can body from the punch during a return stroke of the ram and clamping mechanism for biasing the tools against a front face of the adapter late. The can bodymaker further comprises one or more load cells located in or on the adapter plate and configured to generate an output signal or signals indicative of an axial force exerted on the tools by the cup passing therethrough.
